HISTORICAL TOY NOVELTY.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FREDERICK C. J osnPH GREBE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Historical Toy Novelty, of which the following is a specification.

My invention essentially consists of an eggshaped toy or educational device comprising the combination of two exterior or shell members adapted to fit together and arranged to form a single yelk-receiving interior chamber, one of said shell members being chambered and provided with an end opening extending through the end of the shell from the chamber, and an interior or yelk member arranged Within the chamber to protrude through the end opening to complete the symmetry of the egg, all the parts being so constructed and arranged that the interior yell; member may be retracted from the opening to allow the rim of the shell around such opening to form a plain base to support the egg in an upright position.

It also comprises an egg toy consisting of the interior member and the exterior chambered members or divided shell having its exterior provided with a suitable inscription to suggest the discovery of America by Columbus under the Spanish flag and having its interior member provided on one face With a suitable inscription to suggest the period of English rule, and upon another face with an inscription or device to suggest the ascendency of the United States.

My invention is in the nature of a Columbian Fair souvenir and is adapted forAmerican kindergarten geographical and historical illustration and teaching, its object being not only to serve as a toy and Columbian Fair souvenir, but also to illustrate graphically in an eggshell a synopsis of four hundred years of the history of the United States, and at the same time illustrate mechanically the egg-shell illustration employed by Columbus to silence his detractors.

For convenience of description I will denominate my invention The Columb U. S. Egg, as that is the title by which it is to be known. The said egg consists of three parts and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the egg as it normally appears. Fig. 2 shows the egg turned round from the position shown in Fig. 1 and the parts in position as they appear when Columbus egg illustration-has been exemplified. These two figures illustrate the first period of United States historythat under the Spanish flag. Fig. 3 represents the second period, when the egg has been broken apart and its yelk apparently appropriated by England. Fig. 4 illustrates the third period of the history with the United States in the ascendency. Fig. 5 shows the reverse sideof the yelk of the egg.

The toy consists of two hollow shell members A B, a yell: or interior member C, and an emblem D, mounted upon such yelk memher. The large end member B is chambered to receive the yell: member C, and has at its end an opening E of sufficie'nt size to cause the rim of the shell around such opening to afford a firm base to support the egg and prevent it from tipping over. The small end member A is fitted for union with the large end member and is also chambered to receive the emblem and part of the yolk member. The Several parts are so constructed and arranged with relation to each other that when the yolk is in position within the shell members and the shell members are fitted together, as shown in Fig. 1, the yelk C, which is preferably spherical in form, protrudes sufficiently from the opening E to complete the Symmetry of the egg.

F represents an annular tenon projecting from A, and G represents the seat in B for the same, whereby the two shell members A and B are secured together, as in common with toys of this class. The exterior of the two shell members A and B is provided with a map H H, representing the American continent. The apex of the egg is provided with a representation I of the Spanish flag, and beneath the flag, on one side of the egg, is the inscription J Columbus Found It. 1492. In practice the egg is first shown to the pupil in its entire form, as in Fig. 1. Then to exemplify Columbus illustration of the ease of performing an act when shown how, the egg is held by the large end member B and is rapped upon atableor other suitablesur face K with sufiicient'force tozdrive the globu lar yelk and the small end member A up until the rim of the open end E of B rests upon the table, as shown in Fig. 2, whereupon the egg stands firm.

To illustrate the next period of the history of the United States, the two shell members A and B are drawn apart and areheld in position shown in Fig. 3, thus showing the device L upon the under face of the yelk, which consistsof a representation of the English flag and the inscription England Ground It. 160717 7 5. This illustrates the second notable period in United States history. The final movementis then made by reversingBand placing the open end E upon t'he yelk. Then by holding thetop member An-p- United States. The'inverted memberB forms a firm pedestal to sustain the yelk member, as shown in Fig. 4. V

Now,having.described my invention, what I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
