AMUSEMENT DEVICE.
l Application led June 12, 1926. Serial No. 115,543.
Our invention relates to an amusement device, particularly to a device having its amusement features embodied in games to be played by childrennor adults; and more particularly to a device which on one face is provided with openings, representing the open mouths of clownheads, into which balls may be tossed and from which openings by means of channels the balls may be led to other openings near the base of the device and there rin a bell and be permitted an exit from the devlce; and which on another face is provided with moon faces in which there is substituted for the nose a hook upon whicha ring may be tossed; the device having on another of its sides a score board upon which the records of the participants in the game may be recorded; the device beine of box-like formation formed so that the sides carrrying the game features incline from the base upwardly toward each other, one side being removable and the whole device being so constructed that it will stand in operative position upon a base forming an integral part of the structure.
Some of the objects of our invention are, to provide a device of this character which shall be of comparatively few parts, of simple and compact construction, of cheap cost, which will retain itself in operative position for use without other support than its base which has embodied therein gaine ifeatures that are of novel character and hlave both amusement and educational value.'4
Another object is, to provide a device of this character that shall carry amusement or game features on opposite faces and shall.
pzrlovide means to record the score on another Another object is, to provide a device of this character of substantially box-like construction, in which one of the ame carrying faces of the structure is slidal ly removable from the structure, in order to permit ready access to the interior thereof whendesired.
Another object is, to provide on one of the faces of the device a ball toss game comprising openings into which balls may be tossed and having means to carry the ball from said opening to other openings near the base of the structure so that the ball will ring a bell and register in a slot numbered correspondingly to the number of the opening into which the ball was originally tossed.
Another object is to provide hook devices to represent the noses in the ring toss portion of our device, which may be detached from the device for convenience in shipment, or which may be readily attached thereto when the rino toss game 1s to be operated.
Another object is, to provide a structure of this character which shall be of box-like formation and of such form that the base thereof shall be substantially wider than the top and such that when the games are operated the structure will, of itsown weight and because of this peculiar formation remain in operative position.
Y Another object is, to provide on the game carrying faces of our device designs forming'.
a part of the games which shall 1n combination with the mechanical features be of a comic character and of themselves be a means of amusement to children or others.
Our invention consists in the peculiar construction, combination, organization, and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawings, described in the specification and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the front face of our device, showing the clown faces the arrangement of the apertures in the face, the
ball as positioned in one of the outlets near the base of our device, and in dotted lines, the arrangement of channels leading from the respective apertures to the corresponding exits and also in dotted lines the arrangement of the bells in reference to these exits.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the rear face of our device, showing the arrangement of the ring toss game with the. moon face design of figures and the detachable nose pieces thereon, and the detachable relation of this side of our structure from the box-like body portion.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation, showing the hook like nose pieces of the ring toss game with o a ring mounted thereon and with a score board on one side of the structure.
Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-sectional view, taken on line 4,-4, looking in the direction of the arrows, showing the arrangement of the'apertures in the face carrying the balltoss game, the-relation thereto of the channelled guides and the bell provided in the base of the structure near the exits.
Fig. 5 is a top 'plan view, partly in cross section of the hook members in the ring toss lll game, and the means by which these hook members are detachably held inoperative relation therewith.
Fig. 6 is an enlar ed view in elevationA of a 'hook member an means by whichit is operatively carried in combination with the ring toss-game.
, Referring to the drawing, 1n which like numerals of reference indicate' corresponding parts, our device comprises a substantially box-likebody portion having a base 10, a front 11 and a rear 12, which front 11 and rear 12 extend upwardly' from. the base 10, incline toward eachother and terminate in a top portion 13, which 1s of lesseixdepth than the base 10. Extending substantially vertically upwardly from the base 1Q to the top portion 13 are opposite lateral sides 14,
which join the sides-11 and-12 and thereby complete the formation of the substantially box-like structure.
rlhe front face 11 is provided with'a series of illustrations of arbitrarily formed clown shaped faces 15, each showing an open mouth and each of -which is in fact an aperture or opening-16 into which a ball or other like device may be tossed. Directly back of each of these openings 16 we provide a substantially U shapedv channel or guide piece 17', which guide pieces are inclosed within the interior of the box-like structure and at its upper end is aixed to the inner face of theA side 11 and extends downwardly approximately to the base 10 where it terminates on.
' the inner face of an outstanding substantially vertical portion 21 at or near the lower end of the face 11 and by having its other endsupported by a downwardly extending leg 22, connecting with the sub-base 1 8 and ahxed to the inner face of thebase 10. The sub-base 18 thereby also serves as a stop for the ball after it has been tossed into the aperture 16 and been directed to the lower end of the channell'?. Y Y
Below the sub-base 18, carried on the base 10 we provide a bell, or sound producing device 23, extending upwardly from which, through the opening 20 in the sub-base 18 is a plunger 24, which plunger 24 -is so positioned and arranged that it is in the path of travel of the ball as it reaches the lower end exits 19 corresponding number or count to that of the aperture or mouth opening 16 into which it was tossed and from which it was led by the channel member 17. These channel guides 17 connect each aperture in the clown faces to a corresponding aperture near the base; and each clown face is designated-by a different numeral or valuation,
which corresponds to the designating nu.
ing-16 and appear in therexit 19, when it' will ring the bell 23 positioned under that exit 19, and will then bestopped by the stop .'21 and there retained in position to be removed for further use in the game. The channel member 17 being of substantially U shaped formation is so positioned in reference to the. rear of the face 11, that the face 11 closes the open portion of the channel member 17and thereby forms a substantially four sided closed` guide or channel, to direct and control the course of the ball from Athe mouth opening 16 to the corresponding exit 19 and the bell 23.
The channel members 17 are so attached to the sub-base 18 and the rear facevof the front portion 11 of our device that they may be readily detached therefrom, for repair or other purposes, and are so disposed in operative position in reference to the mouth openings and the exits, that' while these respective openings are each provided with an independent channel member and bell, the
channel-member and bells are enclosed `within the box-like structure of our device and are hidden from view. l The game provided on the rear face 12 of the box-like structure is so arranged that each arbitrarilyV designed or moon shaped face illustration is given a different designating number or value and is provided with a detachable hook-like portion 25, representative of a nose. This hook-like portion 25 is designed to receive and hold a ring 26 which may Vbe .tossed and caught thereon. The hook-like portion 25 is carried on or affixed to a base or plate 27, which is retained in detachable but operative positionv to the moon shaped face or gure or the face 12 of the box-like structure by means of a clamp 2,8. T-he clamp 28 is formed in substantially a single piece and is provided with opposite jaw-like portions 29 and-a jaw like portion 30 joining'the lower ends of the opposite jaw like portions 29, the jaw like portions 29 and 30 being angularly bent slightly from the body portion of the clamp 28 suiiciently to receive-back thereof andAbetween-these jaws 29 and 30 and the face 12 of this side of our structure, the plate like portion 27, carrying the bent hook portion 25. This arrangement is provided so that the hook like portion may be mounted in or demounted from their operable Jositions if it is desired.
The ace l2 upon which the ring toss game is carried is detachable from the box-like body ortion of our structure. This relation is ma e possible by providing on the opposite edges 31 and 32 ofthe op osite sides 14 of the box-like body portion, ,ange portions 33 and 34, which are inwardly bent toward each other and on the base 10 a flange' portion 35, upwardly bentfrom the base portion 10, and which together with the flange portions 33 and 34 are arranged to engage and position the face 12 and hold it in operative but slidable relation to the box-like body portion, in order to permit its removal when desired, for access to the interior of the boxlike body portion, if for repairs or other reason such access is desirable.
On one of the vertical sides 14 wc provide a schedule or score board, as is shown at 36, upon which may be made the record of the scores of the various players in the game.
It will be seen therefore, that We have provided a device which is of unique design, of compact construction, which embodies amusement and educational features, which is so arranged that it retains itself in position for use without other support than the base of its box-like body portion., which is i arranged .so that a plurality of different games may be played thereonv by different sets of players, and which is provided, in-
tegral with its body portion` with means upon which a score or record of the score of the various players may be kept, and which also, while substantially of closed box-like formation, is neverthelessv so designed that access may readily be had to the interior thereof b v means of a removable sliding face, when it is desired for purposeslof repair or other reasons to have such access, which is provided with sound producing means to register a hit or successful toss of a ball to notify a layer of the fact that a score has been ma e, which is provided with parts detachable and removable from the boX-like structure to facilitate the convenient shipping and transportation of the device and to effect a ready assembling or disassembling thereof, and which has other advantages and results, some of which may be obvious from the foregoing specifications. I
l/Ve may fashion our box like structure of wood, metal, papier-mch, or any other suitable material having sufficient strength and rigidity for the purpose for which it is designed, and we may likewise fashion our channel members of wood or other suitable material, and may provide sound producing means of any desirable character, such that they will be operated when the ball has come to rest in the exit compartments heretofore described, and we ma provide the game carrying faces of our evice with any arbitrarily chosen suitable illustrations or figures in place of the clown heads or moon shaped illustrations. i
Having thus shown and specifically described our invention in detail we do not wish to be limited thereby, except as the '7 state of the art or appended claims may require, for it is obvious that various modifications and changes may be made in the particular combination, organization, arrangement, and construction of parts of our invention, without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.`
