Be it known that I, CHARLES L. WALDRON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Round Pond, in the county of Lincoln and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Plate or Pan Lifter, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to litters for plates, pans, basins, platters, dishes, bowls, oups, saucers, dac.; and it consists in the construction and arrangement ot' the parts thereof, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of thisinvention is to provide a device of this character which is positive in its action,simple and effective in its construction and arrangement, strong and durable, easily handled, and readily understood.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of the device, showing a plate in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section on the line a: .fr of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a similar section on the line y y of Fig. 2. Fig. G is an enlarged detail sectional view.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a bar or rod having a centrallylocated flange 2 on the upper side thereof, which is formed with ratchet-teeth, and by means of the central location of the said ilange shouldersS are provided at the upper portion of the said bar or rod. Y At the rear end of the bar or rod is secured a wooden handle 4, and at the front end of the same is a transversely-extending yoke 5, having its ends formed into downward-projecting arms 6, which are curved and converge at their lower ends. On the said baror rod 1 is mounted a sliding block 7, which takes over the shoulders 3, and said sliding block is provided with a slotted head 8, in which is located a pawl or dog 9, pivoted to the said head. The front end of said pawl or dog is formed with a nose 10, adapted to take into the ratchet-teeth of the flange 2 and hold the sliding block 7 in adjusted position. rlhe rear portion of said pawl or dog is formed with a finger-piece 1l,

and below said finger-piece is a nose 12, which may be pressed downward into the ratchetteeth and prevent backward movement of the said sliding block. On the top portion of the head 8 are guards 13, and at the rear of said heads are formed upwardly-projecting lugs 14. The legs ofa U-shaped spring 15 are embraced by the guards 13, and the lugs 14 coniine the said legs in position on the head and obviate lateral extension of the same. The bow of the said spring 15 is seated in a slot 16, formed in the forward upper portion of the pawl or dog 9, and the function of the said spring is to normally hold the said pawl or dog in such position that the nose 10 thereot' will always be in engagement with the ratchet-teeth of the flange 2. The under side of the forward end ot' the block7 is provided with a forwardly-curved arm 17, which is adapted to act in conjunction with the arms 6 of the yoke 5 to take under the edge of the article to be lifted in raising the same. The rear of the sliding block 7, on the under side thereof, is formed with a finger-piece 18, by means of which the said block may be moved on the bar or rod l when the nose 10 of the pawl or dog9 is disengaged from the ratchetteeth and the ilange 2.

This device may be used in connection with any form of dish or receptacle, and when the dish or receptacle is in connection therewith it cannot accidentally become disengaged therefrom, which is owing to the spring forcing the dog or pawl downward into the ratchet-teeth, as aforesaid. To adjust the block 7, the finger is placed on the piece 11 to disengage the pawl or dog, and said block may then be moved or adjusted as desired. The parts of this device entire, with the exception of the handle 4, are to be constructed of suitable metal.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In a device of the character set forth, the

combination ot' a bar or rod having centrally- 95 located ratchet-teeth thereon,with horizontal shoulders on opposite sides thereof, and a front yoked end with downward-extending curved arms, a sliding block mounted on said bar or rod having a lower curved arm and a IOO finger-piece and an upper slotted head, a pawl or dog mounted in said slotted head and having a nose at the front and rear portions thereof, and a spring bearing 011 the top of said paWl or dog to normally hold the front nose thereof in engagement with ratchetteeth, substantially as described.
