WRAPPER.

SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,846, dated August 30, 1892.

To all wiz/m it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN J. COCHRAN, of St. Louis, Missouri, have made a new and useful Improvement inWrappers, of which thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description.

By meansv of the present improvement a wrapper for newspapers, magazines, pamphlets, and other articles is not only adapted to be vreadily opened, but is also materially ro strengthened.

It consists, substantially, in a thread, cord, band, ribbon, tie, ligature, fiber, or analogous article secured to the inner side of the wrapper, with an end projecting beyond the x5 edge of the wrapper. The person opening a bundle inclosed with the improved wrapper grasps the projecting end referred to and draws it away from the bundle, thereby ripping the wrapper and readily removing it zo from the bundle.

The improvement is more fully carried out when the cord is applied to the wrapper in such a manner as to cause it when the wrapper is attached to the bundle to extend more or less around the bundle, so as to serve as a tie or to strengthen the wrapper in the direction of its length, all substantially as is hereinafter described and c'laimed, aided by the annexed drawings, making' part of this specification,in which- Figure 1 is a view of the inner side of the improved wrapper, and Fig'. 2 a view in perspective of the wrapper applied to a bundle.

The same letters of reference denote the same parts.

The wrapper A is usually a piece of paper and of suitable size and shape.

B represents the cord, tie, or fiber, dac. It is preferably securedto the inner side a of the wrapper, and preferably by gluing or cementing' it thereto-that is, the improvement in a measure may be carried out by embody- -ing the fiber, 850., in the wrapper, either at the time of the manufacture of the paper from which the wrapper is ultimately formed or by making the Wrapper in two or more folds and inclosing the fiber, &c., between them, in either of which cases the fiber, &c., should be so attached to the wrapper as to o enable it when drawn as described to carry the underlying portionvof the wrapper with it, so as to practically accomplish the opening of the wrapper; or the cord, &c., maybe and in practice preferably is attached, as shown,

to the inner side of the wrapper. The cord should be secured throughout its length substantially to the Wrapper, as thereby the object of the improvement is more fully attained. The cord is preferably arranged so that its projecting end b shall not come upon the customary gummed portion a' of the wrapper. While the cord, &c., may be otherwise extended upon the wrapper and some of the purposes of the improvement accomplished, I prefer to arrang'e it substantially diagonally upon the wrapper, substantially as shown, as thereby When the wrapper is applied to the bundle O the part B is caused to wind around the bundle, and thus to serve, also, as an auxiliary to the wrapper, as a means for inclosing the bundle, and as a means for strengthening the wrapper. A lighter paper with the part B thus arranged may suftice for the wrapper. For some of the purposes herein named it is not essential that 7 5 an end of the cord, dze., shall project from the wrapper.

I claimw 1. A wrapper provided with a flexible tearing device secured diagonally thereto, whereby the tearing device will encompass the article in a spiral manner, substantially as set forth.

2. A wrapper provided with a cord secured diagonally to one side thereof, said cord being,` upon the 'inside of the Wrapper and encompassing the article in a spiral manner when in place upon an article, substantially as set forth.

3. A wrapper provided with an adhesive substance across one end and provided with a cord secured diagonally across the inner surface of the wrapper, one end of the cord projecting beyond the edge of the Wrapper adjacent to the adhesive substance, substantially as set forth.
