WITJVES SES T'ToRJvE YS UNITED STATES` PATENT QEEICE.
CHARLES WILLIAM WALDRON, OF LEWISTON, MAINE.
QUOIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,605, dated August 30, 1892.
Application filed April 15, 1886. Renewed January 27, 1892. Serial No. 419,405. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, CHARLES WILLIAM WALDRON, a citizenof the United States, residlng at Lewiston, in the county of Androscoggln, in the State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Quoins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to printers quoins; and 1t consists in an expansible quoin composed of two sections connected to each other by gu1de-pins and provided with a cam placed In a recess formed in the sections and which operates to expand the quoin and adjust it in the chase or other place where it is used.
rI he Invention is hereinafter more fully described, reference being had to the accompanylug drawings, in which- Figure l shows the quoin in section m00, F1g. 3, being the plane of section. The quoin 1s shown slightly expanded and is represented as belng in achase. Fig. 2 is a section in the same plane, the quoin being closed. Fig. 3 Is across-section on the line y y, Fig. 1.
Similarletters indicatecorre'sponding parts.
The letters A Bdesignate the sections of the quoin, which are in this example made of equal dimensions. The sections are connected with each other byguide-pins C,whose smaller ends are provided with screw-threads D, that screw into and remain in section A, first passing through the holes E made in the section B, the rest of the pins being smooth, so that the section B of the quoin can freely move on the pins, the extent of this movement be- Ing determined by the stop or head F, which Is formed on the end of the smooth part of the pin and ts loosely in the countersink G of the hole E, said countersink being made as Inuch deeper than the length of the stop or head as will allow of the desired movements of section B on the pins in the various adjustments of the quoin in the chase. It is evident that when the stop strikes the bottom of the countersink it will prevent further expansion of the quoin. In the interior of the sections of the quoin is provided a cavity H, which is formed in the inner sides 0f the two sections to receive a cam I,provided with gudgeons K K at each end, which have their bearings at L L in the upper and lower sides of the sections A B, as indicated in Fig. 3. One of the gudgeons projects from the side of the quoin and is formed into a square spindle M, by means of which the cam is turned at will by applying a wrench t0 it. Instead 0f a spindle for turning the cam, a square or angular hole can be made around the center or axis of the cam to receive a male wrench. Supposing the quoin to be closed, as represented in Fig. 2, if now it is desired to expand it the cam I is turned by suitable means so as to press its enlarged side against the inner side of the cavity in section B, thereby causing that section to be moved laterally and the quoin to be expanded, as indicated in Fig. l. In this operation section A is pressed and held against the side N of the chase by means of the gudgeons K K, which turn in and are pressed against their bearings L in the upper and lower parts of the sections. The expansion of the quoin is guided by the pins C, which prevent the sections A B from slipping against the side of the chase or the furniture, and the stop gives a limit to the extent of the expansion.
I do not restrict myself to the form or shape of the cam here shown, as the cam can be varied without departing from my invention.
The cam may, if desired, be made convex and the cavity in which it turns be mad-e to correspond in shape.
I am aware that printers quoins have heretofore been composed of two adj ustable plates connected by headed guide-bolts having springs, said plates being expanded by means of a tapering screw; and also that eccentrics have been located in the sides of a chase to lock the forms in place. Such, however, I do not claim.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described adjustable printers quoin, composed of the section A, recessed on its inner side, as shown, the section B, also recessed on its inner side, as shown, and provided at its ends with the holes E and countersinks G, the cam having bearings in the upper and lower sides of said sections and adapted to work in the recess II, formed by the recessed inner faces of the sections, and

the guide-pins C at one end screw-threaded my hand and seal in the presence of two subinto the section A and at the other` end prosoribug Witnesses.
vided with a smooth portion and a stop-head 1 l L s adapted, respectively, to work loosely in the CHARLES WILLIAM WM BRON l 5 holes E and countersinks Gof the section B, Witnesses:
substantially as described. A. FABER DU FAUR, Jr., i
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set E. F. KASTENHUBER.
