, LOOK NUT.
PATENTED OCT. 11, 1904.
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII 4.
UNITED STATES Patented October 11, 1904:.
PATENT ()FFICEt FRANK R. ALLEN AND GIUSEPPE ANDREOTTA, OF PASSAIG, NEW JERSEY.
LOCK-NUT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 772,120, dated. October 11, 1904.
Application filed April 1, 1904.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK R. ALLEN and GIUsnrPE ANDREOTTA, citizens of the United States, residing at the city of Passaic, inthe county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock-Nuts, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in lock-nuts; and the object of our invention is to provide a cheap and effective means for locking together relatively rotatable parts. We attain this object by'the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of our device as applied to a bolt and nut. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the lineX X in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of the locking-pin. Fig. 4: is a View of the detent-shaft, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the detent-shaft inserted in the locking-pin.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views. i
In the drawings we have shown our improved device applied to a bolt and nut; but we do not intend to limit our device to this particular use, as it will be found equally valuable in any mechanism in which it is desired to lock one rotatable part to a relatively stationary member.
Z) is a relatively stationarymember or bolt provided with screw-threads 0 upon its surface and provided also with longitudinal grooves (Z (Z d. A rotatable member or nut a is interiorly screw-threaded to turn upon the bolt 6. In the rotatable member a we provide a vertical socket in which is inserted a locking-pin e and a horizontal perforation crossing the vertical socket inwhich is inserted the detent-shaft f. The locking-pin c is provided with an enlarged head-section 6, provided with a horizontal perforation e to receive the detent-shaft f. The detent-shaft f is provided at its large end with a crosssloty for receiving a screw-driver or other tool, and it is also provided with a depressed central section f. The locking-pin e is inserted in the vertical socket in the rotatable member a. The detent-shaft f is then inserted in the horizontal perforationin the ro- Serial No. 201,029. (No model.)
tatable member through the horizontal perforation e in the enlarged head of the lockingpin c. The depressed central section is raised by turning the detent-shaft f. The rotatable member a is moved along the stationary member 6 to the desired position when the detent-shaft f is turned in its socket, thus forcing the locking-pin down into the groove d in the stationary member 6, thus locking the rotatable member a securely to the stationary member 6.
We have shown the stationary and rotatable members screw-threaded; but it will be seen that the screw-threads may be entirely omitted and the surface may be smooth, and
our device will be equally effective provided one or more sockets cl are formed on the face of the stationary member to receive the locking-pin c.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is 1. In a device of the character described the combination of arelatively stationary member provided with a socket, a movable member thereon, provided with a vertical socket and a horizontal perforation, a locking-pin in the vertical socket also provided with a horizontal perforation and a detent-shaft having a depressed section intermediate of its ends in the horizontal perforation in the locking-pin and movable member, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a device of the character described the combination of a relatively stationary member provided with a groove, a member movable thereon provided with vertical and transverse sockets, a pin provided with a transverse socket anda pin having a depressed section intermediate of its ends in the horizontal sockets substantially as shown and described.
3. In adevice of the character described the combination of a relatively stationary member provided with an indentation upon its face, a member movable thereon provided with vertical and transverse sockets a pin provided with a transverse socket and a detent-shaft having a depressed section intermediate of its ends in the horizontal sockets substantially as shown and described.
4. In a device of the character described, the
combination ofarelatively stationarymember In testimony whereof We have aflixed our provided With an indentation upon its face, a signatures in presence of tWo Witnesses. member movable thereon and provlded with FRANK R ALLEN vertleal and transverse sockets, a pin provided with a transverse socket and a shaft in GIUSEPPE ANDREOTTA' the transverse socket and having a depressed Witnesses: section intermediate of its ends substantially W. B. MAGEE, as shown and described. FRED MULLER.
