NUT-LOCK.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Anms E. LTNTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Madison and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable Others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a nut lock and has for its object to provide a look by means of which the nut may be securely held against working loose on the bolt.
A further object is to provide a nut locking means comprising a locking key which is so constructed that it may be forced out of locking engagement with the threaded end of the bolt by driving a wedge against one face of the outer end thereof to enable the nut to be unscrewed from posit-ion when desired.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a nut lock; embodying my improvements with the nut applied to a bolt; Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1; looking in the direction indicated by the arrows; Fig. 3 is a similar view with the key disengaging wedge in position; Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on line 4t-4 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken on line 55 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the locking key.
Referring to the drawings, for a more particular description of the invention, 1 indicates the bolt which is of any ordinary form, and 2 the nut. In practice, the inner face and one edge of the nut are recessed, as at 3, the outer and inner portions 4: and 5 of said recesses tapering inwardly leaving a contracted portion 6 at the junction of said outer and inner portions. A locking key 7 is seated in the recessed port-ion of the bolt and comprises a straight handle portion 8 which fits in the outer portion of the recess and the locking head 9 which fits in the inner portion of said recess and comprises an in- Specification of Letters Patent.

\vardly, inclined pointed toe 10 which is adapted to engage the threads of the bolt. Said locking head 9 is also provided at its outer side wit-h the inclined tapering projection 11, the other side of which is adapted to abut against the wall 12 and limit the outward position of said head. A coiled spring 18 is arranged in a recess 14 extending approximately at right angles to the re-- cess 3, with one end bearing against the handle portion of said key causing the toe 10 thereof to normally engage the threads of the bolt.
When it is desired to screw the nut on the bolt, a key releasing wedge 15 is driven or inserted between the outer side of the oper ating handle of the key and the outer wall 16 of the outer portion of the recess 8, which swings the handle portion of the key inwardly against the action of the coiled spring 18 and disengages the toe 10 from the threads of the bolt. After the nut has been completely screwed up in position, the wedge is removed when the coiled spring forces the locking toe of the key against the threads of the bolt and prevents reverse rotation of the nut. After the nut has been screwed in position, it may be removed by inserting the wedge as heretofore described to release the locking key with the bolt threads.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood with out requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
In combination with a nut provided in its inner face with a recess having an outer portion which tapers inwardly and an inner portion which tapersoutwardly, leaving a contracted portion therebetween, a locking key having a straightouter portion which fits in the outer portion of said recess, and a locking head provided with an inwardly inclined approximately V -shaped locking toe adapted to engage the threads of the bolt, and an outwardly inclined portion adapted to engage the outer Wall of the inner portion of said recess and limit the out- Ward position of said locking head, and a coiled spring arranged to bear against the outer portion of the locking key and norlnally hold the toe thereof in engagement with the threads of the bolt body a V'-I shaped space being left between the outer forces the outer end of the key inwardli against the action of said spring and efiects 1 the release of the locking head of the key with the threads of the bolt body, the contracted portion of the recess in thenut forming a pivot for the locking key.
