GEORGE PAUL, 'OF OUYAHOGA FALLS, OHIO.
LETTER-PRESS AND CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,586, dated August 30, 1892.
` Application ned september 1o, 1891. sain No. 405,266. (No man To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE PAUL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cuyahoga Falls, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Letter-Presses and Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of my invention are to provide a new and improved press for taking impression copies of writings and to so construct it that it may be inclosed in a cabinet wherein the operative parts are concealed, and which cabinet shall afford a receptacle for press books, copies, and supplies needed in using the press.
To the aforesaid objects my invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereafter described, and then specifically claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference-numerals indicate like parts in the several gures, Figure l is a front elevation of my improved letter-press and cabinet; Fig. 2, a central vertical section of the same in a plane at a right angle with the front, certain parts being broken away to show the operative mechanism of the press; Fig. 3, a central vertical section through the center of the hand-wheel and roller, hereinafter described, of a portion of the right half of Fig.A
l; and Fig. 4, an elevation of the roller-bearing, with a portion of the cabinet-case.
Referring to the drawings, l is a cabinetcase, usually of wood, consisting of three closed sides, with a top and base, and containing, preferably, a lower lcloset 2 and a multiple of drawers 3, and above the upper drawer an elongated opening 4, through which the letter-book 5 enters to receive the impression by the action of the press and in which the platen of the press, and has at each side slides 9,which run in guides lO. This platen is forced up toward the plate 7 by four segmental cams l2 13, two on each side, the points of the upperones resting against the slides 9 in suitable notches, and the points `of the lower restingin steps l1, attached to the bars 6, between the faces of which cams is a round rod or shaft 14, which extends through the sides of the cabinet in forked iron bearings 15, and is operated by a hand-wheel I6.
The cams are arranged with their greatest diameters in opposite directions, and when the platen 8 is lowered the shaft 14 rests between their faces at their least diameters, and by turning this rod their greatest diameters will be brought in vertical alignment, thereby raising the platen with great force, and when the hand-wheel is released the platen descends by gravitation, restoring the parts ready for another pressure. This construction renders the press quick-acting and very powerful, while being more compact than the presses of ordinary use.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a letter-press, an inverted bed supported and retained by depending bars, and a platen below and arranged to approach said bed, combined with four segmental cams arranged in pairs, with their outer points resting against the platen and depending bars, respectively, and a round shaft interposed between these cam-faces, and means, as a handwheel, for rotating said shaft, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a cabinet having an opening for inserting the press-book, of an invert-ed bed, with its lower face even with the top of that opening supported by depending bars attached to the inner opposite sides of said cabinet, a platen below and arranged to approach said bed, and four segmental cams arranged in pairs, with their outer points resting againstthe platen and depending bars, respectively, and a round shaft interposed between theircam-faces, extending outside of said cabinet and provided with a hand-wheel for revolving it, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, with the cabinet having on its inner opposite sides the U-shaped bars and platen guides and on its outside IDO the forked shaft-bearings, of the inverted bed attached to the upper end of the U-shaped bars, the platen having slides fitting said guides, thesegmentalsegments restingagainst said slides and the U-shaped bar, and the shaft interposed between faces of opposite pairs of segments, resting in the forked bearings and provided with a hand-wheel outside of said cabinet, substantially as shown and described. xo
In testimony that I claim the above I hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE I PAUL. In presence of- C. E. HUMPHREY, C. P. HUMPHREY.
