GEORGEWILLIAM DAVIS, or wnsriyroon'r, QUEBEC, cnivnnn.
. TYPE-WRITER-CAR-RIAGE consrnuo'rion- Specification of Letters Patent. I
Patented an. 7,1913.
.Original application filed January 3, 1907, Serial No. 350,637. Divided and application filed June 23, 1 911,
1 Serial No. 634,952. Divided and this application filed December 15, 1911. Serial No. 666,048.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE WILLIAM DAVIS, of VVestmount, in the district of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-lVritenCarriage' Construction; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The object of this inventionis to improve the construction of typewriter carriage frames. For full comprehension however of my invention reference must be had to the accompanyingdrawings forming a part of this specification in which like reference characters indicate the same parts and wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the carriage supporting frame. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the main frame and carriage supporting frame and the means detachably securing the latter to the 7 frame; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the frames of the main and vibratory carriages; and Fig. 4 is a detail planview of one end of the carriage and illustrating particularly the connection between the platen and the main carriage frame.
This ,application'is a division of patent application Serial No. 634,952, filed June 23, 1911, which is a division of patent application Serial No. 350,637, filed January The carriage supporting frame comprises a pair of angular end frame pieces d and c, the ends of the'vertical and horizontal, legs of which have upper and lower connecting bars fand g respectively, secured thereto and constituting with the said end pieces an of vertical end plates 9 rigidly yoked to-' intact carriage supporting frame.
The carriage consists of the main carriage frame and a vibratory carriage frame carried thereby, the platen roll 2 being mounted in the upper end of the vibratory carriage.
The vibratory carriage consists of a pair gether at their lower ends by a rearwardly facing bar 7- of channel cross-section constituting a rail in which the shifting trundle roll. 8 (constituting part of theshift mechanism not shown) of the carriage runs, the advantage ofthe rearwardly facing channel bar being that particles dropping which is supported upon the vibratory carr1age,carr1es upon the trunnions at each end thereof sleeves a which are flattened at the sides at a), project through vertical slots to in the end frame pieces at and n of the maln carriage frame and slide within the slotsthus maintaining the shifting movement of the vibratory carriage in a constant vertical plane. placement of the sleeves limited by a removable strap 3 The usual The upward disbar 3 carrying the ratchets 4, to one of which is connected the spring 5 for yieldmgly maintaining the platen carrier in its uppermost position,'is ,carriedby the carriage longitudinally thereof and according to this invention has a pair of lever arms 6 fixed rigidly at one end thereon as at 7 and having their opposite ends pivotally connected as at 8 to the lower parts of the end frame plates 9 of the vibratory carriage.
What I claim is as follows:
1. In a typewriter the combination with the frame thereof, a maincarriage supportand trunnions is ed movably thereon and having end frames the upper ends whereof are vertically slotted,of a vibratory carriage carried by the main carriage and having end frames the upper ends whereof areformed with vertical slots in alinement with and of less length than the vertical slots of the carriage, means movably connecting the vibratory carriage to the main carriage, a platen having a pair of trunnions projecting into the coinciding slots of the main and vibratory carriages and resting in the slots of the latter, substantially as described and for the purpose set fort v 2..In a typewriter the combination with the frame thereof a main carriage supported movably thereon and having end. frames the upper ends whereof are vertically slotted,0f a vibratory carriage carried by the main carriage and having end frames the upperv ends whereof are formed with verti calslots in alinement with and of less length than the vertical slots of the main carriage,
an oscillatory bar carried by the main carriage parallel to the oscillatory frame, a pair of arms mounted rigidly upon the bar and pivotally connected to the lower end of the vibratory carriage, a coiled spring encircling the bar and connected at one end to the main carriage and at its other end to the bar, aplaten having a pair of trunnions projecting into the coinciding slots of the main carriage and vibratory carriage and resting in the slots of the latter, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a typewriter the combination with a main carriage frame having vertical slots in its ends,-of a vibratory carriage frame carrying a platen roll with trunnions projecting through the said vertical slots, flat- 5. In a typewriter the combination with the main frame of the machine,of a carriage supporting frame comprising angular frame pieces one of the arms of each of which lie longitudinally of the machine near the rear thereof and are detachably secured thereto the other arms being disposed vertically to the machine and transversely disposed bars connecting the corresponding ends of the arms of the angular frame pieces.
6. In a typewriter, the combination with a main carriage frame having vertical slots in its ends,-of a vibratory carriage frame, a platen roll carried by the vibratory carriage and presenting trunnions which project through the said vertical slots and sleeves upon the trunnions, such sleeves bearing between the adjacent ends of the main and vibratory carriage frames and being flattened to extend through the vertical slots, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE WVILLIAM DAVIS.
