To all whom dma/y concern:
Be it known'that I, ALEXANDER MURRAY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain,re siding at 'Old Basford, in the town and county of Nottingham, England, have invented certain new audluseful Improvements in Machines for Pressing Hosiery and other Goods and Fabrics, of which the following is a specification. t
The invention relates to that class of press having a hollow bottom bed and ahollow top bed, both being heated bysteam. Heretofore,
in such vclass of press, either the top orbottom bed has been a fixture, as far as lateral move# ment is concerned and the top or bottom bed has been capable of only a short rising and falling motion obtained bya screw and y arms, which construction has rendered it difficult to arrange goods on the bottom bed un-l less such goods were mounted on boards.
Now, according to the present invention, a hollow top bed is employed, which is mounted and operated as before, but instead of employing a fixed bottom bed, the bottom bed is mounted on suitable guides and supports'so as to enable the same to be moved outward clear of the topbed when required to ar.
range goods thereonv for pressing and to remove the goods after they have been pressed, and to enable such bottombed to be run in under the top bed for the pressing to be effected. Suitable gearing is provided so that the bottom bed may be moved to and fro as required either by hand or by power, and the steam pipes connected to the same are either jointed or made toislide so as to enable them to follow the motions'of the bottom bed.

a represents thetop'bed, which is acted upon by a screw b and fly arms b to force it downward toward the bottom bed and is raised by said screw aidedby springs c cjarranged around guide rods c c, two of which are shown at each end of the `Ybed d. These guide rods c c are fixed at their lower ends to bars d which are fixed one on each side of the machine to a standard d2 of the frame cl. The
upper ends of these guide rods c 'c fit into guide lugs a a formed on each end of the top bed a, and to the center of each bar d is'fxed the lower end of a rod e, which at its upper end VYcarries the head or cross bar through which the screw bbworks. These rods'ee also serve to guide the top bed by passing between guide lugs o? a2 at eachA end ofthe said top bed. The bottom bed f is provided with descending bearing brackets or feetf, which are supported on the axles gvof flanged wheels g, and these latter run on rails d3 fixed to or forming part of the framing d. The bottom bed f has fixed to'one end thereof bearing brackets f2, through'which passes a shaft h provided with toothed wheels h, and these latter mesh with toothed racks d4 d4f1xed one on each side of the frame d by means of brackets d5 d5.
The 'shaft h has tted thereto hand wheels h2 l by which it can be rotated and thereby cause the bottom bed f to be run in under the top bed when the pressing is to be effected and to be moved outward clear of the top bed when it is required to arrange goods thereon for pressing. The top bed a is formed hollow or with passages therein and it is connected by long bent pipes i @l with the main steam pipes j j as usual to enable the same to be heated by steam and to be free to rise and fall. The bottom bed f is also made hollow or with passages therein .and it is connected by jointed pipes 7o Za with branch pipes j j connected with the main steam pipes j j. By supporting the bottom bed f bybrackets f resting on theaxles g of the carrying rollers g, friction is obviated when moving the bottom bedf to and fro.
The machine as represented in the drawings is provided with. hand driving gear, but if desired power driving gear may be employed.
If desired, in lieu of jointed steam pipes lo 'connected to the bottom bed,` straight pipes may be used passing through stuffing boxes attached to the bottom bed so as to slide steam-tight in and out of the bottom bed f as the latter is moved to and fro.
By the aid` of the present improvements considerable economy in labor is effected, the `employment of press-boards can be dispensed withand a uniform finish obtained which ad vantageously replaces the ordinary ironing IOO and by hydraulic pressing processes in respect to the general classes of goods in the trade.
As a modification the bottom bed may be made to remain within the body of the press and the top bed to move in and out therefrom as above described for the bottom bed, in which case the top bed will be provided with supporting and traveling gear as will be well understood.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is-
1. A press comprising interiorly heated top and bottom beds, mechanism for moving one of the beds vertically, whereby the goods are pressed and released, and mechanism for moving one of the beds horizontally, whereby the bottom bed is exposed, when it is required to arrange the goods thereon, or to remove the goods therefrom and whereby the horizontally moving bed is placed in proper relation with the vertically moving bed for pressing; substantially as herein shown and described.
2. A press comprising iuteriorly heated top and bottom beds, mechanism for moving one of the beds vertically, whereby the goods are pressed and released, and mechanism consisting of a supporting and reciprocating carriage, and gear, whereby the bottom bed is exposed when it is required to arrange the goods thereon and to remove the goods therefrom, and whereby the horizontally moving bed is placed in proper relation with the vertically moving bed for pressing; substan tally as herein shown and described.
3. A press comprising a heated top bed, screw and supporting springs by which vertical motion is imparted to the top bed, a reciprocating heated bottom bed provided with supporting wheels, the side rails on which the wheels run, and the toothed gearing and racks by which the reciprocating bed is operated, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. A press comprising a heated top bed, a traveling heated bottom bed, main pipes, and jointed pipes, whereby the bottom bed isconnected withthe main pipes; substantially as herein shown and described.
