UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARDY \V. CAMPBELL AND JOHN P. DAVIES, OF RACINE, VISCONSIN,
ASSIGNORS TO THE RACINE MALLEABLE AND VROUGHT IRON COM- PANY, OF SAME PLACE.
LETTER-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,758, dated September 24, 1889.
Application filed November 26, 1888. Serial No. 291,925. (No model.)
pertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in letter or copying presses; and the objects of our improvements are, first, to provide a letter-press that is simple in construction and efiectual in operation, and, second, to provide a letter-press with the movable adjustable press in g-plate so arranged that a uniform pressure is obtained at all points when it is in operation. We attain this object bya certain combination and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the letter-press. Fig. 2 is a similar view of same. with letter-book. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the parts.
A designates the base-plate, which is constructed, in any suitable manner, with the upright portions a a and the horizontal bar of. In the center of said bar there is an orifice through which passes the vertical pressure-rod D. The upright a is formed with the slot 0 in the top part and the orifices aflwhich are adapted to a key 0, that holds the main pressure-lever C in position. The slot a is made longer than the width ofthe lever G, with a view of adjusting said lever to any desired height. This is accomplished simply by taking out the key 0 and putting it in a higher or lower orifice a. In the top of the upright a there is an orifice g, the purpose of which will be hereinafter explained.
B represents the movable pressing or top plate, which is constructed in the ordinary way, with the exception of the brace-bars b h, to which is attached the elastic semicircular strap of steel E. Said strap of steel is located and arranged to press as uniformly upon the ends of the movable pressing-plate B as the vertical sliding rod D presses upon the center of same.
G G are two upright bars, having anynuinber of orifices g in the lower ends, by means of which said bars are keyed to the top of the upright a with the key 0. The purpose of the orifices g is to regulate the height of the bars G G accordingly as it is desired.
The vertical pressurerod D has a slot cl in the top, through which passes the lever C. Said rod has its lower end secured to the e1astic strap E. To the forward end of the lever 0 there is pivoted the handle or lever H. Said handle has a cam or elbow h upon one end, and is pivoted to the top of the vertical bars G G. It is readily seen that the handle H imparts an alternating motion to the horizontal lever C, by. means of which the movable plate Bis operated.
Ne attach special importance to the combination of the movable plate B, the elastic strap E, the vertical pressure-rod D, the lever C, and the handle H, by means of which a uniform pressure is obtained upon the movable plate B. W'e also attach importance to the slots and orifices in the upright a, and to the orifices in the top of the upright a, by means of which the horizontal lever G can be raised or lowered, as desired, according to the thickness of book used.
Vhat we claim is In a letter press, the combination of the base-plate A, the movable plate B, the elastic strap E, attached to said plate B, the vertical pressure-rod D, the horizontal lever C, and the handle I-I, provided with the cam or elbow h and pivoted to the lever O, the key 0, and the vertical bars G G, substantially as described and set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
