UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE S. DEARDORFF, OF CANAL DOVER, OHIO.
DENTAL CLAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,479, dated August 23, 1892.
Application filed March 28, 1892. Serial No. 426,790. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ESSE S. DEARDORFF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Canal Dover, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and a useful Improvements in Dental Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for clamping and holding artificial dental plates and teeth during the operation of cleaning or cleansing the same.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved clamp for the above purpose which shall be simple and economical in construction, so as to be within the reach of all persons having artificial teeth, and which shall firmly clamp and hold the plates in a secure and efficient manner.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a clamping device constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the bottom or lower clamping-piece. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the upper piece. Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the device.
In the said drawings, the reference numerals l and 2 designate the two parts constituting the clamp, each provided with lugs 3, having a series of holes or apertures 4 for the passage of the pivot bar or rod 5, by which said parts are pivotally and adjustably connected together. The lower clamp 1 consists of an arm 6, with an oval rim 7, open-at its center and provided with upwardly-projecting side lugs 8, and with upwardly-projecting claws 9 at the front upon the inner and outer sides. The rim at its rear is also provided with upwardly-turned lugs 10. The upper clamp 2 is formed with an arm 12 and an oval rim 13, with a full open center, corresponding substantially with the lower clamp, and the rim at its front and rear is provided with downwardly-projecting claws or lugs 14. The lugs 3 are formed integral with the arms 6 and 12.
The numeral 15 denotes a torsional spring, consisting of a piece of spring-wire bent over at its center and coiled around the pivot-bar 5, with its ends resting upon the lower arm 6. The bent end of this spring rests against the under side of the upper arm 12.
The numeral 16 denotes a pivoted loop which engages with the bent end of the upper arm 12 and locks the parts together.
The operation will be readily understood. The arms 6 and 12 are forced together, opening the clamps by holding the lower arm in the hand and depressingarm 12 bythe thumb. The plate containing the teeth is placed between the clamps with the teeth in front and the arm released, when the clamps will be forced together by means of the spring and the lugs on the rims will securely hold the plate in position.
There are many difierent ways of inserting the plates in the clamps which will suggest themselves to the person using the device, and other objects besides dental plates may be held or clamped.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a dental clamping device, the combination, with the pivoted arms, of the oval rims having the retaining claws or lugs, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a dental clamping device, the combination, with the arms having lugs provided with a series of openings, of the oval rims having the retaining-lugs and the pivot-pins for adjustably and pivotally connecting said arms together, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own 1 have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JESSE S. DEARDORFF.
