UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE AARON VANDAMENT, OF RUARK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO P. O. FRENCH, S. W. MORGAN, AND J. M. FREESE, OF SUMNER, ILLINOIS.
CUTTER-BAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,318, dated August 23, 1892.
Application filed February 2Q, 1892. Serial No. 422,289. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE AARON VAN-- DAMENT, a citizen of the United States,`resid ing at Ruark, in the county of Lawrence and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Cutter-Bar, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to harvesters, and more especially to the cutting apparatus thereof, and the object of the same is to produce an improved cutter-bar.
To this end the invention consists in the specic details of` construction hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and as illustrated on the sheet of drawings, wherein- Figure l is a plan view of this improved cutter-bar. Fig. 2 is a perspective view with the slide and one tooth removed. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section on the line 4 4c of Fig. 1.
Referring to the said drawings, the letter C designates the cutter-bar proper, which is connected at its inner end with the reciprocating mechanism in any preferred manner, and the body of this bar has recesses R for the knives K, each of which recesses has rising from the bottom thereof a lug L, (preferably square,) fitting a hole H in the shank of the knife. Said shank is reduced in width so as to form shoulders S at the sides, which pass in front of the bodyB of the barbetween the recesses. By this construction the knives may be raised out of the recesses and disengaged from the bar, as will be clear.
The top of the cutter-bar O is provided with a depression or groove whose edges E are undercut, as seen in Fig. 3, the inner end I of this groove being closed and the outer end open, and into this outer end is passed a slide or fastener F, whose edges are beveled to engage under the edges E E of the bar, and whose outer end O is turned down, as seen in Fig. 4. T is a square-headed bolt passed through this turned-down end O and into the end of the cutter-bar O for retaining the fastening-slide removably in place. By this construction when the thumb-screw is removed the fastening slide may be withdrawn and one or more knives removed for grinding or repair, and after the knives are replaced the slide may be reinserted to keep them in position.
The parts of this improved cutter-bar may be of any desired material and size, and considerable change may be made in the construction thereof without departing from the spirit of my invention. By its use the necessity for bolts and rivets through the bar or knives is avoided, and hence the parts are stronger and the knives more easily detached and replaced without removing the bar from the machine, as the fastening-slide withdraws from the outer or grain end of the bar.
I claim as the salient featuresl. The herein-described cutterbar, the same having recesses in its upper face, providedv with lugs rising from center of the bottom thereof, knives having reduced Shanks f1tting in said recesses and removable vertically therefrom and having holes therein for tting over and through which said lugs pass and are flush with the upper surfaces of the said knives, the shoulders at the front ends of said shanks resting against the front edge of the body of the-bar, and a fastening-slide passing over said shanks and detachably connected with the bar, as set forth.
2. The herein-described cutter-bar,the same having recesses in its upper face, provided with lugs rising from the bottom thereof, knives having reduced shanks fitting in said recesses and removable vertically therefrom and also provided with holes to engage said lugs, the shoulders at the front ends of said Shanks resting against the front edge of the body of the bar, the upper side of the bar having a longitudinal groove open at its outer ends and with undercut edges, a slide having beve-led edges removably inserted in said groove, the outer end of said slide being turned down, and a thumb-screw passlng through said turned-down end into the end of the cutter-bar, as hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature 1n presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE AARON VANDAMENT.

JAMES LoNzo Cook, SURAT FRENCH.
