UNITED STATES CHARLES .I. SHIRREFF, OF BROCKVILLE, CANADA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN, MACLEOD GILL, OF SAME PLACE.
MANUFACTURE OF SCREEN-DOORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,067, dated August 16, 1892.
Application filed March 31, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES J. SHIRREFF, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Brockville,in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Screen- Doors, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the manufacture of screen-doors; and the improvements which constitute my invention are pointed outin the following specification and claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 representsa face view of ascreendoor constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section in the plane a: 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section in the plane y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a partial transverse section on a larger scale than the previous figures.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a door-frame, which is provided with incisions a, extending from its inner edges in a direction approximately parallel to the face of the frame, and B is the screen, the edges of which are made to extend into said incisions. By these means the screen is retained in position by the incisions; but, in order to give it a firm hold, it may be fastened in said incissions by means of tacks b. In the example shown in the drawings the door-frame is conrtructed of two panels, separated from each other by the transverse strip C, and in this case each of the panels is provided with incisions ex-' tending from its inner edges approximately parallel with its face, and a separate screen is provided for each panel.
In order to facilitate the introduction of the Serial No. 427,271- (No model.)
-in these recesses the strips Dare placed upon the edges of the screen and secured in position by tacks b, which also serve to retain the screen. If desired, the strips D may be ornamented by exposing them to the action of a suitable tool, such as commonly used in the manufacture of moldings.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The improvement in the art of constructing screen-doors, which consists in providing the door frame with incisions extending from its inner edges in a direction approximately parallel with its face and with other incisions at a distance from its inner edges and approximately at right angles to the first incisions, then removing the strips bordered by the two sets of incisions, so as to form recesses in the frame, then adjusting the screen in said recesses, and, finally, securing the strips over the edges of the screen, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES J. SI-IIRREFF.
