Description

l. w. MORLANQ Bag Holder.
No. 48,083. Patented June 6. 1865 NITED STATES ATENT Oriana.
IMPROVEMENT lN- BAG-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,083, dated June 6, 1865.
Z") all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, L. W. MoRLAN, of New Lisbon, in the county of Golumbiana and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Holding Bags; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side View of an apparatus made according to my invention. Fig. 2 shows a front elevation, one of the upright sides of the framebeing seen in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in an apparatus made so as to be portable for holding the mouths of sacks while they are being filled with grain, flour, or other articles.
A designates the upright sides of the frame of the apparatus, which are strongly secured to a suitable platform or base, to which, also, they are held by means of braces F, two or more on each inner face of the upright pieces A.
D D are vertical slots made in each of the upright sides A, forthe purpose of furnishing means for adjusting the vertical pieces B at different heights. The vertical pieces B are set in grooves made in the inner faces of said uprights, so as to be flush with their faces, the slots D occurring along the middle of the width of such grooves.
G G are screw-bolts made fast to the pieces B near their lower ends, and projecting through said slots D outwardly, where they are clamped by nuts 0, which thus fasten the pieces to the sides of the apparatus at any desired height. The upper part of each piece 13 carries a rocking semicircular plate, E, whose curved side is always the lowest. These plates Ear-e pivoted in forks made in the upper ends of the sliding pieces by attaching brackets to their outer faces; The pieces B have no other connection with the sides A than that of the bolt and nut before mentioned, so 'that.although they are within their recesses or grooves when undisturbed, as seen in Fig. 2, yet when any weight is put upon their tops they are free to yield'and bend inward toward each other.
In using this apparatus, Iturn the opposite side of the bag over the plates E on the tops of the springs B, when the plates will adjust themselves at an angle more or less inclined, according to the place the bag occupies with reference to a vertical line through the axis o the plates. The tilt thus assumed by the plates makes the mouth of the bag take such a position as enables the workman to fill it with great ease. The elasticity of the springpieces B tends to keep the mouth of the bag stretched open laterally, and their height is to be so adjusted that the bottom of the bag may rest on the base of the apparatus, and not upon the springs B. The longer diameter of the plates E is to be such as will give the mouth of the bag a sufficient expansion in the direction of the planes of their sides.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A bag-holder constructed and operated substantially as above described.
2. The self-adjusting rocking plates E, for holding the mouth of bags when they areto be filled, constructed and applied substantially as described.
L. w. MORLAN.
