J. W. REED.
PIANO ACTION RAIL.
"N0. 480,829. Patented Aug. 16, 1892.
ATTEST: \NVENTOR'.
Jb/zn Z05ReecZ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. REED, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PIANO-ACTION RAIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,829, dated August 16, 1892.
Application filed November 20, 1891. Serial No. 412.486. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN \V. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Piano-Action Rails; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming partof this specification.
The present invention relates to that type of action-rails composed of wood and metal, the object of the present improvement being to provide a simple and effective combination of the two rail portions, whereby the union of the metal with the wooden portion of the rail is rendered very intimate, so that the portions will act in perfect unison to afford strength and stiffness to .the rail. I attain such object by the combination and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which illustrates in perspective a portion of an action-rail constructed in accordance with my present invention.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the Wood body or backing of a piano-action rail of any of the usual formsin cross-section and provided with a longitudinal groove or chanhe] 2 in its plane forward face, into which the rib or web 3 of the T-shaped metal rail or section 4 fits, so that the plate portion 5 of said rail will have close contact with the plane face of the wood body or backing 1, the two portions being secured together in a permanent manner by screws, nails, or other usual fastening means.
My improved construction affords a cheap, simple, and durable form of action-rail, in which the parts can be made extremely light and yet afford ample strength and stilfness.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An action-rail for pianos, consisting of a wood body or backing 1, having a plane forward face formed with a longitudinal groove or channel 2, and a T-shaped metal section the rib or web 3 of which is fitted into the channel 2, with the plate portion 5 in close contact with the plane face of the body or backing 1, as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof witness my hand this 18th day of November, 1891.
JOHN \V. REED.
In presence of- ROBERT BURNS, GEO. H. ARTHUR.
