IL PETERS, Pholo-Lilhographnn wnmn ton, 0.0.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FEIcE,
MAX JUNGER, OF LINDENAU, NEAR LEIPSIG, GERMANY.
PIANO-HAMMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,651, dated May 12, 1885.
Application filed November S, 1883. (N0 model.) Patented in Germany December 7, 1882, No. 23,377.
able block at the end of the hammer-rod, and
likewise mounted in a frame capable of being reversed, if desired, the outer surface being covered with felt or other suitable material.
My invention consists in the arrangement of a bent spring attached to a suitable block, to which the hammer-rod is fastened, to form the hammer-head, and the arrangement of a screw-bolt capable of forcing the sides together, so as to regulate the shape, size, and elasticity of the spring.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a longitudinal section of a hammer. Fig. II is an end view of the same. Figs. III and V are sections of hammerheads, showing modifications; and Figs. 1V and VI are end views of the same.
Similar letters represent similar parts in all the figures.
B is the hammer-rod, and A a block attached to the hammer-rod and forming the lower part of the hammer. This block A is provided with a recess, 0, and a flat surface, E, at its end, terminating in a projection or nose, a.
D is an elliptical spring, one end of which is inserted into the recess O, and the other end against the flat surface E, and secured to the block A by means of a suitable screw, H. Between the ends of the spring and the material of the block A felt av, or any other suitable soft material,is placed, to prevent any noise or clatter from the contact of the two hard substances.
Through the oval part of the spring D a bolt, F, is placed, capable of forcing the sides together, so as to regulate the shape and size of the spring, as may be required.
The bottom of the recess 0 and the projection or nose (0 at the end of the surface E hold the ends of the spring and cause the compression of the spring by the action of the screw F, to produce a lengthening of the hammer-head. y
The spring D may be made of steel or other metal, whalebone, rattan, hard india-rubber, wood, celluloid, or any other suitable material, and may in some cases answer every purpose; but to prevent any foreign sound or noise by the striking of the hammer-head against the metal strings of a piano or other musical instrument not due to the sound or vibration of the strings, the upper end of the spring or hammer-head is covered with leather or felt, J, or any other suitable material.
Both ends of the spring D may be inserted into a recess, 0, in the block A, as shown in Fig. V, in which case the bolt F maybe dispensed with and sufficient elasticity be obtained in the upper ends of the block A, on account of this recess 0, to allow a slight regulation of the spring D.
\Vhat I claim as my invent-ion, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a hammer for piano-forte actions, consisting of a block, A, and elliptical spring D, the regulating-screw F, substantially as and for the purpose described.
MAX JUNGER.
