UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT L. FRANCE, OF MILLDALE, ASSIGNOR TO THE KENTON CAN COMPANY,
. OF COVINGTON, KENTUCKY,
SUPPLEMENTARY LENS FOR BICYCLE AND CARRIAGE LAMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,661, dated August 9, 1892.
Application filed May 26, 1891. Serial No. 394,187- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT L. FRANCE, of Milldale, in the county of Kenton and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supplementary Lenses for Bicycle and Carriage Lamps, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to improvements in bicycle and coach lamps, not in their individual construction, but inadding to such lamps a supplementary lens that will increase the brilliancy and splendor of the light evolved, and thereby produce a simple and very serviceable attachment.
With these ends in view my invention will consist in the peculiar features and combinations of parts more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a bicycle-lantern in dotted lines and having my supplementary lens attached and shown in solid lines. Fig. 2 represents a plan View of the leather bonnet with its holding-pin holes, slits, and strap in which the supplementary lens is fixed and fastened to the hood of the bicycle- 1antern. Fig. 3 represents a view of the lens with its circumscribing band and holdingpins. This bonnet will be made of any flexible material.
Similar letters of reference refer to similar parts in all the figures.
A represents the bonnet, made of leather or rubber. It is fastened by means of the strap E to the metal frame of the lantern-hood in a detachable manner.
13 represents the lens circumscribed by the 0 band C, having the pins D soldered to it. The pins D pass through the flexible bonnet at D D D D and are clinched.
E is a strap passing around and through the bonnet A, having a buckle 6, so as to fasten 5 it to the lantern-hood. fare slits cut in the intrado of the flexible bonnet, so as to make it fit close and snug around the hood. By this device the outer light is excluded by the close-fitting bonnet. Hence the light of the lamp is concentrated upon the lens.
Slight changes which might suggest themselves to skilled mechanics could be made without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention. Hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein shown for bicycle or carriage lamps.
What I do claim is- The combination of the following elements: the detachable leather lens-holding bonnet A, having the pin-holes D and slits f, the strap E, with its buckle e, the lens B, having the circumscribing band C, and pins D, clinched to the bonnet, substantially as shown and described.
ALBERT L. FRANCE.
