BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,540, dated August 9, 1892.
Application led November 1'7, 1891. Serial No. 412,165. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. ADAMS, of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in suspender-buckles made of sheet metal and called flat buckles.
The object of this invention is to produce a substantial buckle which will take up but little space beyond the thickness of the suspender-Web and in which the cost of manufacture will be reduced.
The invention consists in the new and peculiar features of construction by which the buckle is produced entirely from iat stock and the number of pieces in whichis lessened, together with the novel combination of parts, as will be more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 represents a front view ot' the improved buckle, showing the cast-oft secured thereto by the spring-catch. Fig. 2 represents a side view of the buckle l and cast-0E, partly in section, the cast-od being released from the buckle. Fig. 3 represents an enlarged view of a portion of the buckle, showing the construction of the pivot-bearings and the clamping-plate.

In the drawings, 5 indicates the front plate, which has the turned-up sides 6 6. A portion of the metal of the sides 6 6 is partly separated therefrom and bent inward at right angles with the surface to form the pivots 7 7. The lower portion of the front plate 5 is somewhat contracted and is bent over upon itself to forni the spring-tongue 8, having the shoulders 9 9 and the central thumb-plate 10 at the upper portion thereof.
The clamping-plate 11 has its upper edge bent over nearly at right angles with the Inain portion, and this edge is serrated, as at 12, to enter the web. The ends 13 13 of this plate are also bent over at right angles with the length of the plate, and these ends are provided with perforations 14 14 to form bearings for the pivots 7 7. This clamping-plate 11 is also provided with ears l5 15 on the lower edge, by means of which the plate is turnedon the pivots 7 7, and the serrated edge 2 is disengaged from the suspender-Web.
The cast-ott 16 is formed in the shape of a box and has the inwardly-bent lips 17 17, adapted to be engaged by the shoulders 9 9 at the upper edge of the spring-tongue 8. This cast-0E has a depending guide formed in part therewith, the straight bar 18 of which is formed by bending the flat stock around until the edges meet. By this construction I am able to produceasubstantial buckle which will occupy but little space and will not injure the clothing by Wearing through.
The suspender-loop passing through the cast-oft guide can be readily removed from the Inain portion of the suspender and will not be worn by the round bar 18, over which it passes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the front plate 5, having the bent ends 6 6, carrying the pivots 7 7, bent therefrom, and the back plate 11, having the serrated edge 12 and the bent ends 13 13, provided with perforations 14 14, adapted to receive said pivots 7 7, of the spring-tongue 8, formed integrally with the front plate and having the shoulders 9 9 and thumb-plate 10, and a cast-off 16, formed from sheet metal in the shape of a flat box, having the cut-out portion 16', lips 17 17, adapted to receive the shoulders 9 9, and the round guide-bar 18, as and for the purpose described.
