Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. PIKE, of Groton, in the county of Tompkins, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Poles, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to the construction of poles or shafts adapted to be used interchangeably upon wagons and sleighs.

My object is to produce such a pole which may be readily adjusted so as to be applied to a sleigh or wagon at will cheap, durable in construction, and of' great utility.

My invention consists in the several novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described, and which are specifically set forth in the claims hereunto annexed.

It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a bottom plan View of the pole complete provided with my improved attachment and means for expanding and contracting the ends of the branch arms to fit awagon or sleigh of any width. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the coupler which connects the adjusting-bars. Fig. 3 is a view of the pivoted branch arm. Fig. 4.- is a sectional view of that portion of the cross-arm containing the slotway in which the head of the traveling coupling-bolt passes.

It will be observed that this invention may be applied equally well to a pair of shafts as to a pole, and therefore without limiting myself to a pole I will describe it in connection therewith.

A is a pole provided with a grooved crossbar 1, attached and braced in the usual way and provided at its ends with pivoted branch arms 2, having eyes a pivoted at their ends.

8 are bars secured at their outer ends with a right and left thread, respectively, adapted to engage with the coupler 9, threaded at its ends to receive the threads upon the bars 8.

My invention is operated as follows: When it is desired to contract the ends of the pivoted arms 2 for the purpose of adapting them to a sleigh, the coupler 9 is rotated sufficiently to draw the ends of the bars 8 toward each other, thereby causing the head 6 of the bolt 4 to travel in the slotway 7 toward the center and draw the pivoted branch arms 2 inwardly to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. It will thus be observed by this process that the eyes upon the arms 2 can be adjusted to any width desired. It will also be observed that by pivoting the eyes a to the end of the arms said eyes may at all times be turned in a position so as to directly enter the shackleeye upon the wagon.

Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination,with the cross-bar of a pole, of arms loosely secured thereto, and rods secured to said arms at a point between their ends, and means for securing its opposite end adj ustably upon the cross-bar.

2. The combination, with the cross-bar of the pole, of the arms loosely secured thereto, eyes loosely secured to said arms, and rods secured to said arms ata point between their ends, and means for securing its opposite end adjustably upon the cross-bar.

3. The combination,with the shaft or pole, of the pivoted arms 2, secured thereto, rods 3 and 8, secured upon the bolt 4, the bolt 3i having a head 6 traveling in the slotway 7, and the coupler 9, receiving the inner ends of the rod 8, as set forth.
