DUST-BEATER.

SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 480,389, dated August 9, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JEREMIAH J. SLATTERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansingburg, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Dust-Beater, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in dust-heaters; and the objects of my improvements are by means of a combination of a loop of spirally or helically coiled wire and a holder with two projecting arms or forks to provide a cheap and durable dust-beater which will not leave any raised marks of dust upon the objects beaten, and one which by reason of having no sharp angles can be used without any inj ury or damage to the articles beaten. I attain these ends by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side and vertical view and representation of the entire dust-beater, of which A is the handle, which is inserted into the socket of the forked holder B, as indicated in dotted lines. D is a loop of spirally or helically coiled wire, which forms the beater proper. Each end of this loop of spirally-coiled wire is coiled about a raised arm or fork of the holder B, and O is the fastener, which fastens and holds the ends of the spirallycoiled loop of wire to the arms or forks of the holder B.

Fig. 2 is a side and vertical view and representation of the forked holder B Without the ends of the spirally-coiled loop of wire attached. It is made with a socket, (shown in dotted lines,) so that the handle Amay be inserted and secured therein by means of a nail passing through the hole E in the base H of the holder and into the handle A. The holder B is provided with two arms or forks G and G, around which arms or forks are coiled the two ends of the spirally-coiled loop of wire forming the beater proper D. 0 represents the fastener, which after the ends of the loop D are coiled around and about the arms or forks G and G of the holder is passed through F and F, which indicate holes in the upper part of the arms orforks Gand Gof the holder,

and is then tied or twisted, so as to form a continuous belt passing through these holes F and F, and thus fastens and holds the spirally-coiled wire to and prevents it from slipping from the arms or forks G and G of the holder.

Fig. 3 is a side and vertical View and representation of the forked holder B with the wire D coiled about the arms or forks G and G and fastened by means of the fastener O. From the ends of the arms or forks of the holder B the spirally-coiled wire forms a loop, as seen in D in Fig. 1, and which is the beater proper.

It is intended that the loop of spirally-coiled wire can be made of any size or out of any kind of wire, that the handle A, as well as the forked holder B, can be made of wood or iron, that the fastener C can be made of wire, string, or leather.

I am aware of the fact that a steel cleaning-brush has been patented in which helically-coiled wire was bent in the form of a loop, which loop was provided with a middle section of helically-coiled wire that connected with the center of the loop at the top of the latter and with the lower end of said middle part and the ends of the loop inserted in the handle. This older construction differs from mine in the fact that my device has no center part, and the ends of the loop of coiled wire pass around the forked arms of the holder for attachment, and said holder is provided with a socket for inserting the handle.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a dust-beater, the combination, with a handle made with the holder B, having forked arms G G, of the loop of helically-coiled wire D at its ends, each arranged to encircle and to be secured to one of the forked arms of the said holder, substantially in the manner as and for the purposes set forth.
