SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 479,671, dated July 26, 1892.

Be it known that 1, PETER V. SMITH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Umbrella-Stand, of which the following is a full,clear, and exact description.

The object of this invention is to provide a portable device of neat and compact form, wherein umbrellas may be securely retained and their handle portions exposed to view, a further object being to provide an umbrellastand with separate compartments and each compartment with a glazed front piece near the top to exhibit the handles of umbrellas within and a single cover that will close the tops of all the compartments.

To these ends my invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of parts, as is hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side view of the device with umbrellas within. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a top view of the device closed.

There is a preferably-hexagonal case A provided, the wall of which maybe made of wood, sheet metal, or other material, said case-wall being supported upon and attached to a bottom piece B, that is hexagonal in contour, and is provided with a projection B, that is similar in form as to its periphery and is considerably smaller in diameter. Upon the sides of the portion B a hexagonal casing O is secured, which is thus held concentric with the outer case A, the walls of each case being so located relatively as to dispose their polygonal sides parallel in pairs. The inner casewall 0 and outer case-wall A are joined together by walls a, that extend from opposite corners of the concentric cases, thus dividing the space intervening between into several compartments Z), that are all covered by a lid D, which is hinged, as at c, and is preferably provided with a lock to hold the lid in closed condition. Each of the compartments 1) is furnished with a window d of suflicient area to expose the handles of umbrellas e, placed within each compartment, these windows being glazed to protect the goods from dust.

There is preferablya base-block E provided, on which the parts described are mounted and rotatably secured by a center bolt g, these being balls it introduced to keep the bottom B from frictionally bearing upon the base-block, or casters may be utilized for this purpose, if desired.

All of the compartments 1) may be filled with umbrellas, a different quality and price in each, and there maybe a card secured on the glazing within each compartment to indicate the cost and price of contained goods.

The central compartment t, that is afforded by the wall 0, may be used to hold mixed stock, or canes may be placed in said receptacle.

The entire device can be set upon a counter or at the door of a store and allow an inspection of the difierent styles of umbrellas that are protected from unwarranted abstraction from the casing by the means already described.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An umbrella-stand consisting in a base E and a body rotating thereon "and comprising a bottom block B, having a raised central portion R, a pivot-bolt g, connecting the base and block, anti-friction rollers interposed between the adjacent faces of the base and block, the inner case 0, receiving at its lower end the portion R, the outer case the lower end of which incloses the block 13 and having a glazed upper end, and the cover D, closing the compartments formed within said casings, substantially as set forth.
