SPECZFIC'ATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,628, dated July 26, 1892.
Application filed February 25, 1892. Serial No. 422,757. (No model.)
T aZZ whom it may concern: terior of the socket-tube a at such points as Be it known that l, JOHN B. Cass, of Brookwill locate them in a longitudinal median line lyn, in the county of Kings and State of New when the tube is introduced within the last- York, have invented a new and useful Last, of stock A, which is apertured from above to which the following is a full, clear, and exact neatly iii; the tube and wings. After the description. socket-tube a has been fully inserted within This invention relates to improvements in the last-stock A transverse pins or screws d the construction of lasts used in the manuare driven or screwed into perforations made facture of shoes, and has for its object to prothrough the stock and wings c, which will re- 10 vide a last that will have increased durability tain the cap-plate b in contact with the comb and which will have its instep-block detachof the last-stock and also prevent the rear ably connected to the last-stock by novel walls of the stock from spreading when the means, whereby the last is rendered more conlast is hammered upon. The instep-block B venient in use. can be retained from lateral displacement at 15 To these ends my invention consists in the its lower end by any preferred means. As construction and combination of parts, as is shown, it is cut ll-shaped below and fits into hereinafter described and claimed. a mating notch in the last-stock A, which will Reference is to be had to the accompanying hold the block true if the upper end portion drawings, forming apart of this specification, is properly secured to the stock.
2c in which similar letters of reference indicate The improved device provided to secure the 7 corresponding parts in all the figures. last stock and block B together consists of a Figure l is a longitudinal section of the last latch-dog e, that is pivoted between ears 6' and and improvements thereon on the line 1 1 in projects through a slot (2' in the cap-plate b,

Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the and the projecting portion that is forwardly 25 line 2 i in Fig. l of a complete last and at bent and is furnished witha depending toe e tachnicnts, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of parts engages said toe with a close-fitting recess in shown in Fig. 1. the top of the block, as shown in Fig. 1. The

In use itis of advantage to support the last be attached to the stock A, so as to engage its 3 5 with work on it in an inverted position upon free end with the dog and cause it to inter- 8 5 astandard ofproperheight, technically known lock with the recess in the block B. When as a j ack, (not shown,) which latteris prothe last is within a shoe and is to be removed, vided with a vertical pin on top that enters the instep-block B is first released by using a socket in the comb of the last when the sole the ordinary last-hook to tilt the dog 6 rear- 40 of the shoe is to be operated upon in process ward and out of the recess in and top of the of manufacture or repair. block, which can then be withdrawn in the To strengthen the parts of the last at the usual manner by applying the hook to the rear, where the socket is formed, an improved transverse hole on, the subsequent applicasocket-tube a is provided, that projects from tion of the hook to the hole or enabling the 45 the lower side of a cap-plate Z), which is of operator to pull the last-stock from the work such a curvature and contour as will adapt it it was used to support. to fit upon the comb of the last-stock, the It is evident that the integral cap-plate h tubular projection being integral with the and socket-tube a may be employed in comcapplate. bination with lasts that are not furnished with 50 Opposite wings c are formed upon the exdetachable instep-blocks and strengthen them to resist percussive strain. HenceI do not desire to limit the use of this portion of the invention to lasts having an instep-block.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In alast, the combination, with a vertically apertured and longitudinally slotted last-stock, of a cap-plate imposed on the comb of the last-stock, a pendent sockettube, two longitudinally-extended wings integral therewith, a latch-dog for an instep-block, pivoted to the cap-plate, and transverse pins or screws passing through the stock and both wings, substantially as described.
2. In a last, the combination, with a stock and an instep-block thereon, of a cap-plate on the comb of the stock, a latch-dog pivoted in a slot on the cap-plate and adapted to latch into a recess in the top of the instep-block, and a spring pressing the dog toward said recess, substantially as described.
3. In a last, the combination, with a laststock, an instep-block thereon, and a capplate held on the comb of the stock by wings on a socket-tube, and pins passing through the stock and wings, of a latch-dog pivoted between depending ears and in a slot in the cap-plate and adapted to enter a recess in the top of the block, and a plate-spring secured by one end in a groove of thelast-stock and pressing the heel of the latch-dog, substantially as described.
