IIOIVARD G. LOOKE, OF WEYMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO 0. A. MILLER, OF BROCKTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
LAST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 557,210, dated. March 31, 1896.
Application filed May 28, 1894. Serial No. 512,669. (No model-l To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD G. LOCKE, of WVeymouthfin the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lasts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lasts which are- I an improved construction of lasts of this class, particularly with reference to the means for connecting the two sections in such man nor as to prevent them from being entirely disconnected, and to hold them firmly in relation to each other when the last is in use, and at the same time to permit the ready displacement and forward movement of the heelsection.
To these ends the invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a partial side elevation and partial section of a last embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 represents a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a longitudinal section showing the two parts of the last separated. Fig. 5 represents a sectional view of a modification. Fig. 6 represents a section on line 6 6 of Fig. 4. Fig. 7 represents a perspective view of one of the parts shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, a represents the fore-part section of the last, and 1) represents the heelsection, said sections being provided with inclined bearing-surfaces which are of such form that when the section b is raised it is also permitted to move forward to a sufficient extent to give the requisite shortening of the last for the release of the last from the boot or shoe upon it. Said bearing-surfaces are preferably offset, as shown clearly in Fig. 4, the bearing-surface of the section a presenting a seat or stop against which a corresponding shoulder on the section b bears when the heel-section is in its operative position.
The sections a b are permanently connected bya coupling, which, while it permits the free vertical and forward movement of the heelsection, prevents said section from being detached or entirely separated from the forepart section, so that the two sections are always kept together. The said permanent coupling is preferably constructed as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, it being composed of two members, one of which is a rod or pin 0 affiXed to the fore-part section and extending parallel with the bearing-surface thereof, while the other is a plate a affixed to the heelsection b and provided with a slot or orifice a through which the pin 0 passes, the plate 0 being adapted to slide freelyup and down upon the pin, while the slot 0 which is elongated, permits the heel-section to swing forward, as indicated in dotted lines in 'Fig. 1, the heel-section being provided with/a recess 1), which permits the heel-section to be swung forward, the pin 0 and slotted plate 0 acting to a certain extent as a hinge. The sections a b are also provided with a temporary coupling at the upper part of the last, which serves to prevent lateral or endwise motion of the upper part of the heel-section when it is in its operative position. Said coupling, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4, is the upper end (1 of the pin 0, said pin passing through a metal plate or strip 6 affixed to the fore-part section. The other member of the temporary coupling is a plate d affixed to the heel-section b and provided with an orifice (1 adapted to receive the pin d. It will be seen that the pin d and plate d permit the free upward movement of the heel-section, the said members being separated by said movement, and that when the heel-section is returned to its operative position said members are interlocked and prevent any independent lateral or endwise movement of the upper portion of the heelsection.
In the construction shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7 a plate or bar f is affixed to the fore-part section by means of studs or rivets f passing through ears f formed on said bar, the latter taking the place of the pin 0 as a member of the permanent coupling. The other member of said coupling in this modification is a staple f affixed to the heel-section.
One member of the temporary coupling is of the same construction as that shown in the other figuresnamely, a plate d affixed to the heel-section and provided with an orifice adapted to receive a stud or pin (1 formed on the upper portion of the plate or bar f.
The plate 6 in the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 4c and the neck f in the 0011- struction shown in Figs. 5 and 7 constitute a stop which limits the upward movement of the coupling member on the heel-section.
I claim A transversely-divided last, comprising the fore-part section having affixed to its rear portion an elongated guide, stops at the ends of said guide, and an upwardly-projecting pin or stud above said guide, and the heelsection having an eye permanently engaged with said guide between the stops and adapted to slide thereon, another eye arranged to engage said pin when the heel-section is in place, and a recess between the two eyes whereby the heel-section is permitted to swing forward when raised, the said guide and the eye engaged therewith constituting a perm anent coupling or connection between the two sections, and a hinge which permits a swinging movement of the heel-section when the latter is raised, While the pin and the eye cooperating therewith constitute a separable coupling which connects the upper portions of the two sections when the heel-section is in place, the said stops cooperating with the eyes on the heel-section in limiting the downward movement of the heel-section.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 3d day of April, A. D. 1894.
