The invention relates to improvements 'm lasts of the type in which the toe part moves upwardly and to the rear sothe shoe can be removed without undue strain. The invention consists vof a heel part and a fore part cut ona circle, in such a manner as to permit the shoe to ymove kaway from the heel of the last thereby eliminating all strains.
The invention further consists of operating parts orv plates which slide in relation to each other having pins operating in the slots which are eccentric with the curve surface. dividing the two parts of the last, which will cause the fore part of the last to move away from the heel part thus eliminating all frictional tendency between the two parts. The invention further consists of detailed construction which will be taken up hereinafter. l
The object of the invention is to provide a special device which will allow a shoe to be removed from Vthe last without undue strain or trouble and at the same time provide a last which is` durable and cheap to manufacture.k v y Referring tothe drawings: y i

The improvedV last shown on .the drawings comprises afore part `l() and a heel part 11, having curved abutting surfaces 12 and 13 which underf working conditions are locked together as a rigid construction. `Figure l'illustrates the last, with a shoe 14 rmounted in position indicated by dotted lines. It is to obviate these conditions .thatthe subject matter of the invention relates. This structure is made of. metal and is readily secured to the wooden last by the elongated pins 27 and 28. These spacing plates 24 and Y25 in addition to the elongated pins 27 and 28'are held rigidly to the.

Formed in thestationary plates 22 and 23 are circular .slots 35 and V3f're'lupward 4movement and; which` is rigidly `secured to the swinging single plate 32 and held at all times in swinging relation to the heel part of the last. The pin 37 is made with a head having an exact diameter of the slot in which it travels, the pin part is of a smaller diameter but with Sullicient length to form a corresponding head on the opposite side of the plate 32 with a diameter of the same dimension as the slot in which it runs. It can be readily seen that this makes a very durable construction as the guide' pin is readily secured to the plate 32 while the enlarged ends have a running fit in the slot and 36. With the guide plates rigidly secured to the slot in the heel part of the last makes a very rigid con-V struction. Formed in the plate 32 is a circular slot 38 adapted to receive a pin 39 which is free to slide in the slot 38 of the plate 32. The ends of the pin are of smaller diameter and are riveted to the plates 22 and 23 which makes a rigid and durable structure. The slots and pins mentioned hereinbefore determine the path of the fore part of the last in its upward and forward movement f or removing the shoe. In carrying out the invention the two parts of the last are divided by two circular abutting surfaces which when closed must fit perfectly and accurately and when the upwardmovement of the fore part of the last takes place it must not only move upwardly but away from the rear part of the last thus avoiding friction caused by any swelling of the wood which isliable to happen due to dampness. This double functioning of the'fore part of the last is accomplished by making the two circular slots a trifle eccentric to the circular line cutting the last and when the fore part of the last moves upwardly the pins in the slot will guide the fore part of the last away from the heel part as indicated in Figure 6 shown by the dotted lines 40. It is to be understood that when the two parts of the last 40* are together they must tperfectly but as the fore part of the last moves upwardly the pins in the slots `gradually move the abutting surfaces away from each other thus avoiding any trouble or delayin the operationjof removing the shoe from the last.
rThe fore part of the last and the heel part of the last when closed 'arejlocked together by a novel means. Mounted betweenvthe metal plates 22 and 23 is alatchr41 fulcrumed at 42, the rear endvof this latch is constantlypressed upwardly bythe spring 43 which is anchored in a right angle slot 44 in the spacer plate 25. The opposite end of the spring is U shaped one side of'which rests against the bottom of the slot 21 while the other side constantly acts against the rear Vpart of thelatch 41vforcing the opposite end downwardly into the supporting hole 16 when the jack pin isremoved.
Cutin the lining 16 at its upper end is a slot 45`to allow the latch 41 to be operated on by the jack pin 19, this structure can be made in various ways but the device as shown having a slot of the same dimension as the slot cut in the wood facilitates manufacture. After the lining 16 is placed in position the slot in the wood and the slot in the lining 16 is vc ut' at the same time leaving a free space for the latch 41 to operate in. It can be seen in Figure '2 that the 1atch'4'1 is held downwardly by the jack pin 19. When the circulark plate 32 of the fore part ofthe last is swung down into the heel part the two parts of the last, will remain unlocked until the jack pin 19 is removed. The pivotal pin 42 Figure 10 is of smaller diameter on their outer 'ends forming a shoulder which allows the pin 19 to be riveted to the plates 35 and 36 thereby making a rigid construction. The latch has a free running surface on the pin 42 in its operation. Cooperating with the latch 41 is a catch 46 formed in the circular plate 32. The plate moves down into position as shown in Figure 1 and is readily seen that the two parts are locked together and cannot be separated until the jack pin 19 is forced into the hole 16 which pushes the latch 42 out of the catch 46 thus completing the control structure of the two parts of the last.
In operation the upper and sole are placed on the' last to be joined together. The last is supported by the jack pin 19 being placed in the supporting hole 15. In this position it is obvious that the heel part of the last 10 and the fore part llvare'locked together as a rigid structure as shown in Figure 1. After the shoe is finished 'it must be removed from the last and the operation has been the cause of one of the greatest difficulties to remove the shoe from the last without straining the shank. This is due to the fact that the curve surface ofthe lastis gripped by the curve surface of the heel of the shoe and to force theheel by the last causes undue strain and trouble. To offset this diiicultya special device has been formed consisting of cutting the last laterally on a curve line indicated by the surfaces 12 and 13. When the fore part of the last is moved upwardly on a curved line the relation of the curve is such as to move the fore part of the last and the shoe backwardly. This upward and backward movement of the fore part of the last allows the curve surface of the heel of the shoe to move away from the curve surface of the heel of the last. The upward movement causes the top of the shoe to be removed with quickness and dispatch. The upward and backward movement of the shoe and the fore part of the last allows the shoe to be removed with readiness but to obviate the sticking by friction of the abutting surfaces 12 and 13 the slots 35 and 36 in the plates 22 and23 and in the slot 38 in the plate 32 are cut a little excentric from the abutting surfaces 12 rand 13 which causes the fore part of the last to move away from the heel part in its upwardmovement. When the two parts are brought together again they fit perfectly thus allowing the two` parts to be arranged symmetrically and when separated all frictional tendencywill be removed.
When the heel part of the last and the fore part are locked together they must be locked rigidly in position, this is accomplished by a latch 42 cooperating with the catch 46 which holds it permanently in position until the jack pin 19 is forced against the latch 42 releasing it from the catch 46 which allows the fore part of the last to move upwardly and rearwardly so the shoe can be removed. The latch 42 is constantly pressed upwardly by the spring 44 which allows the latch to be forced into place, inthe catch 46 by the'spring 43 when the jack pin 19 is removed. I
What I claim is new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a last made in two parts having two abutting surfaces, forming, a heel part, a fore part guiding plates provided with slots in the heel part, a single slotted guiding plate in the fore part of the last,` pins for guiding the plates, a latch in the slotted plates, a catch formed in the single plate for lockingzthe two parts of the last together.
2. In a last made in two parts having two Cra curved abutting surfaces, forming a heel part, and a fore part, guiding plates providedwith slots in the heel part, a single slotted guiding plate in the fore part of the last, pins running in the slots for guidingr the plates, a spring pressed latch in the guiding plates, a catch formed in the single plate for vlocking the two parts together, the last provided with a hole to allow the spring pressed latch to be operated.
3. In a last made in two parts having two curved abutting surfaces, a heel part of the last having a slot cut therein, stationary guiding plates secured to the sides of the said slot provided with eccentric operating slots, a fore part of the last having a single guiding plate providedwth an eccentric operating slot working between the double guiding plates in the heel, part of the last, apin secured to and extending through the single plate and a pin secured to the double plate,
