Be it known that I, FLEMING AUGUSTUS OBRIEN BEDINGFELD, a subject of the Queen of GreatBritain, residing at Northwood House, Mutford Beccles, in the county of Suffolk, England, have invented a new and useful Combination Measuring -Peg and Marker Suitable for Playing Quoits and for other Pu rposes, of which the following isa specification.

My invention consists of a combination measuring-peg and marker, either with or without a loose cap, which combination peg and marker is fitted with a suitable measure that can be drawn out or returned at will, or such measure may be made to wind up automatically.

Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the peg. Fig. 2 is a side view of the top of the peg. Fig. 2 is a detail View of the plug. Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively a side view and a vertical section of the top of a modification of the peg shown in Fig. 1.

Fig. 1 shows a sectional elevation of one of my improved combination measuring-pegs and markers, which consists of a tubular peg a, having a shoulder 17 and a fixed hollow top 0, which latter is screw-threaded internally at its upper end and fitted with a perforated screw-nut d, or the screw-thread may be dispensed with and the nut may be made to fit in the top like a plug, or in any other convenient manner. Such peg contains a length of chain or other suitable measure 6, fitted at its lower end with a swivel f and plug g, and at its upper end, which passes through the screw-nut, with a button h or its equivalent. A loose capz' fits over the top of the peg. In playing quoits the peg is put in the ground and the loose cap placed over the top, as shown in the drawings, to prevent injury thereto, and when it is desired to ascertain the distance to any given point the chain or other measure is drawn out sufficiently to take the required measurement. lVhen the chain or other measure is drawn out to its full extent, as shown in Fig. 2, the swivel allows it to be moved round the peg in any direction without twisting, while the plug prevents its lower end escaping through the perforated nut, and

into the peg such plug acts as aweight to draw the chain or other measure down, while the button prevents it passing through the nut into the body of the peg.

Fig. 2 shows a detail View, in elevation, of the head of the peg with the loose cap removed and the chain drawn out. Fig. 2 shows a detail view of the plug 9 and swivel f, the latter being riveted to the case of a spring-measure, so that the measure winds up automatically.

Fig. 3 shows in side elevation a modification of my invention, which consists in making the peg asolid, with a shoulderb and fixed head 0, having a recess 0 therein and a drawout hole d in the top. Fitted in such recess is a spring-measure c, the outer end whereof is passed through the draw-out hole d and furnished with a loop c, whereby the measure can be drawn out to any desired length. The head or top 0 is fitted with a loose cap 1 in a similar manner as already described with reference to Fig. 1, such cap being shown in dotted outline. A groove c is formed in each side of the recess 0'. In these grooves the central stud or pin 7', Fig. 4, of the springwinder rests, thus holding the measure in position, while the recess is made sufficiently narrow to keep such central stud or pin depressed, so as to allow the measure to wind and unwind easily.

Fig. 4 is a sectional front elevation of the head or top of the peg 0, showing in dotted outline one of the grooves c in the recess 0, with the spring-measure e fitted therein.

What I claim is- 1. The combination, with a peg provided with a chamber and a central hole at at its top, of a flexible measuring device carried in the said chamber and adapted to be drawn out through the said central hole, whereby the distances of surrounding objects from the peg may be measured, substantially'as set forth.

2.
