SIDNEY B. MEREDITH, OF ONEIDA, NEW YORK.
BILL-FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 479,604, dated July 26, 1892.
Application filed March 28,1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDNEY B. MEREDITH, of Oneida, in the county of Madison, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bill-Files, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to the class of files which are designed, chiefly, for holding in a suspended position show-bills, advertisingbills, time-tables, or other papers of various characters; and the invention consists in an improved construction and combination of the component parts of the file, which is more conveniently manipulated, simpler in construction, and more effective in its hold on the paper attached to the file, all as hereinafter more fully described, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is afront view of a file embodying my improvements, the bill suspended therefrom being partly represented by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view on line w m in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line 1/ y.
Like letters of reference denote like parts in all the figures.
B represents the base of the bill-file, and O the clamping-plate, between which and the aforesaid base the bill is clamped at one of its edges.
In order to allow the bill-file to be hung on nails or hooks projecting from a wall or other support, I form the base B with an upward extension B and perforate said extension to allow the stationary nails or hooks e eto pass through the extension, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The clamping-plate G is hinged to the lower portion of the base,- and the adjacent gripping-faces of said parts are formed with a longitudinal tongue-andgroove joint. I preferably form the groove 1) in the base B and the tongue t on the plate 0-, which latter is thus stiifened. In the groove b is an opening 0, which is elongated in the direction lengthwise of the groove, and across said opening is a staple or pin a, fastened to the base. The plate 0 is provided Serial 110.426.671. (No model.)
with an opening d, through which extends the shank of a hook h, which is pivoted to the plate andis adapted to engage the staple or pin a when the plate 0 is placed contiguous to the base B, and thus lock the said plate in its position. The protruding shank of the hook serves as a handle by which to manipulate the hook. I
In applying a bill to thedescribed file the plateOis to be unlocked from the baseBand turned up to allow the edge of the bill to be placed over the groove 11 of the base. Then by turning down the plate 0 and pressing it against the interposed edge of the bill the latter is pressed into the groove b by the tongue 25, and is thus firmly gripped between the plate and base. Then by turning the hook h so as to engage the staple or pin a the plate G is locked and caused to retain the-billin its suspended position.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The improved bill-file consisting of the base B and the clamping-plate 0, provided witha tongue-and-groove joint on their gripping-faces, and a clamp or clamps locking the plate 0 on the base, as set forth.
2. A bill-file consisting of the base B and the clamping-plate 0, provided with a tongueand-groove joint on their gripping-faces, a staple on said base, and a hook on the clamping-plate, adapted to engage and release the said staple, substantially as described and shown.
3. A bill-file consisting of the base B, formed with the groove 1), opening 0 in said groove, and with the upward extension B, the plate 0, hinged to said base and provided with the tongue 2? and opening d, the pin a, attached to the base transverse of the opening a, and the hook h,pivoted to the plate Oand extending through the opening d, substantially as described and shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 25th day of March, 1892.
SIDNEY B. MEREDITH. [L. 8.]
