SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. &79,208, dated. July 19, 1892. Application filed March Zl, 1892. Serial Nox &25,844. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. ENSCHED, of Crete, in the County of Saline and State of Nebraska, have invented certain'useful Improvements in Clevises; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to a new and improved clevis.
The object of my invention is to provide a clevis in which the pin shall be adjustably and detachably held, the object being more particularly to provide a clevis embracing the points of cheapness, utility, and Simplicity.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l shows a sectional View of my clevis having the pin inserted and in its locked position. Fig. 2 shows the pin in its position preparatory to being withdrawn from its lower seating in adjusting the draft link or tree. Fig. 3 is a top View, Fig. 4 a bottom View, and Fig. 5 a sectional View, of the pin on line xx, Fig. 1.
A represents the stirrup, which may be of any suitable metal, size, or configuration, which is provided at the upper stub with an enlargement B. The lower stub is approXimately the thickness of the stirrup. Passing through the terminal ends or stubs of the clevis are two registering cylindrical openings adapted to accommodate the metallio draft-pin C. Within the lower stub the opening is interrupted by the senicircular lip D, (shown in Fig. 4,) which projects into the opening a suitable distance. The upper stub-opening is clear, but provided with a pin-opening upon the side, which passes through the upper opening, so as to accommodate a pin D', which forms a transverse semicircular rib within the stub corresponding to the lip D.
The draft-pin comprises an upper thumb portion e' and a stock c. Near the upper end I provide a circunferential groove a, and eX- tending from this groove I mutilate or remove part of the stock of the pin, so as to get the fiat draft-surface a', as shown. This 5o surface ends near the lower end, so as to provide the cylindrical bearing portion b, below which I provide the groove b', and extending from this the fiat portion ?7 Now when both the clevis and pin have been constructed as described I insert the draft-pin C into its seatings, adjusting it so that the lip D will readily work past the flat portion 11 and rest within the groove b', as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The pin D' is now inserted, which passes through the upperstub and partly rests within the groove a, as will be understood by referring to Fig. 3. In this position the pin C may be readily removed from the lower stub; but it can only ride in one position, as the fiat surface a' checks the adj ustment, and pin D' ,whichis riveted within its seating, prevents the pin C from being removed from the upper clevis-seating. After the draft link or tree has been inserted, the pin C is turned one hundred and eighty degrees, so as to present the fiat surface a'to the rear, as shown in Fig. 1, in which position the lip D works into the lower groove b', and so securely looks the pin within the clevis. The clevis is not weakened by the insertion of the pin D', as this pin is without the bodyline of the clevis.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is-
1. As a new article of manufacture, a clevis the stubs of which are provided with registering pin-openings, in combination with a draftpin workingwithin said pin-openings,provided with an upper groove and a fiat or mutilated portion extending from said groove, and a pin passing through the side of the upper stub and resting partly within the groove of the draft-pin, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a clevis the stubs of which are provided with registering openings adaptedvto contain a draft-pin, the lower stub being provided with a lip projecting into its pin-opening, in combination with a draft-pin working within said opening provided with an npper circumferential groove, a mutilated portion extending a suitable distance from said groove, and a lower circumferential groove leading into a mutilated portion below, said lower groove being IOO adapted to aocomnodate said projecting lip groove b', and the mutilated portion b", all and the upper groove a non-removable pin, all substmtially as and for the purpose set forth. 10
