COMBUSTIBLE POCKET SPITTOON.
'Patented Jlily 1.2,l 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEAN KOEHLER, OF FREIBURG, GERMANY.
COMBUSTIBLE POCKET-SPITTOON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,873, dated July 12, 1892.
Application tiled February 13, 1892. Seri al No. L21,451. tNo model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JEAN KOEHLER, of Freiburg,in the Grand Duchy of Baden and German Empire, have invented a new and useful Combustible Pocket-Spittoon, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel, simple, efficient, and economical combustible pocket-spittoon; and it consists, essentially, in a pocket-spittoon composed of combustible and elastic material having a funnel-shaped spittoon-pocket provided with a bottom slot, the edges of which are norinally in contact and are separated laterally by compressing the sides of the funnel-shaped spittoon-pocket.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is a side elevation of the improved combustible pocket-spittoon. Fig. Il is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, omitting the cover-section. Fig. III is a plan view of the same, and Fig. IV is a similar View showing the position of the parts when the sides of the spittoon-pocket are compressed to open the slot.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my inven tion,I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein- The letterA indicates the cap or cover sec-- tion, and B the body portion, of the combustible spittoon-pocket, which parts are made in the form of a cigar-case and are composed of card-board or other elastic material which is combustible land is made water-proof. The body-section B is provided with a funnelshaped spittoon-pocket C, formed at itsbottom with a slot S, the edges of which are normally in contact, the construction being such vent infection, have hitherto given no satisfactory result. This is due to the fact that it has not been considered necessary to pr0- vide the sufferer with a receptacle for the mucous substances, which he can have with him everywhere and at all times, being easily portable, and which can be used without drawing attention to the user.
When my improved device is to be used, the sufferer takes the case or pocket in his hand and presses on the narrow sides of the same. By this action the slot S and part B open sufficiently wide to allow of the passage of the mucous substance thrown off by the user, which then falls into the lower part 0f the receptacle. When the pressure ceases, the pocket regains its normal form, the slot S is closed automatically, and the part A is then replaced over the part B.
Vhen the lower part of the pocket B is full, the spittoon with its contents is burned in the iire, which is the best means to prevent infection and to kill the baccilus.
It requires no further explanation to show that this invention is of great hygienic importance. Y
Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent lof the United States, is-
l. A pocket-spittoon consisting of combustible and elastic sections fitting one within the other and the inner section having a funnel-shaped spittoon-pocket provided with a bottom slot, the edges of which are normally in contact and are separated laterally by compressingthe sides of the spittoon-pocket,sub stantially asgdescribed. Y
2. A pocket-spittoon composed of combustible and elastic material and having a funnel-shaped spittoon-pocket provided with a bottom slot, the edges of which are normally in contact and are separated laterally by compressing the sides of the funnel-shaped spittoon-pocket, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
Y JEAN KOEHLER. Witnesses:
M. REIHER, FEIEDE. SGHLICHTER.
