Description

(No Model.)
F. PARK. HARNESS TBRRET.
No. 478,632. Y Patented July 12, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS PARK, OF MONTAGUE CITY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WARREN M. KING, OF ORANGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
HARNSSBTERRET'.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 478,632, dated July 12, 1892. l
Application filed April l2, 1892.
Serial No. 428.904. (No model.)
zen of the United States, residing at Montague City, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Terrets 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
My present invention relates to an improve; ment in harness-terrets; and it has for its object to provide an attachment of simple and inexpensive form to serve as a hold and guide to the driving-reins and, together with said reins, to take the place of the ordinary bridle-checkrein.
It consists of a terret applicable to a harness-saddle provided with the usual holding means for attachment, and it has the general form of a circular loop and in addition an interposed lip between which and the said ring is a slot to receive the driving-reins and hold the Same to prevent the animal being driven from throwing his head downward.
In the drawings accompanying this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation showing a terret embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a terret, showinga modified form of the holding-ring.
Similar reference-letters indicate like parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, A is the holding portion of the terret provided with a screw adapted to take into a nut fixed in the harness-saddle. Above the holding portion of the terret is the ring B, and between said ring and screw is a guard-flange a, which when the terret is in place rests upon the upper surface of the saddle. Vithin the ring B is a lip C, which gives to the said ring, as to its interior, somewhat of a spiral forni. Between the lip C and the base of the ring a slot is formed 'to receive the driving-reins.
This slot D is preferably of angular form to suit the sectional form of the reins, and the face of the terretadjacent to said slot is fiat to give a proper bearing to the stop provided 5o on the said reins.-
The driving-reins at proper points are provided with suitable reinforcements, of leather preferably, sothat when dropped into the slot they may not pass through toward the animals head.
It is the purpose to have two of these terrets fixed to the harness-saddle, and While driving the driver holds the reins tight to keep them into the upper portions of the terrets. 6o 'When he desires to form a check, he lets the reins drop edgewise with the stops next to him, in order that they may ind their way into the slots D, and then slackens up until the stops bear against the flat portions adjacent to said slots.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A terret to combine the functions of a 7o guide and check for the reins, which consists of a ring or loop, a lip curving within the .same to form between the latter and the base of said loop a slot to receive and hold the reins, and a holding means by which the terret may be attached to the saddle, as set forth. In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS PARK. Witnesses:
