C. DUNHAM. TRANSFORMATION B0X.
Patented July 5, 1892.
Waimea we Ncmms paens co., PHorailYuo., msmnarnn. n. c.
` zo sition shown in dotted lines.-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CURTIS DUNHAM, OF NEW'YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO JOI-IN J. VVOHLTMAN AND ALBERT L. GIBBS, OF SAME PLACE.
TRANSFORMATION-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,536, dated July 5, 1892.
Application filed March 15, 1892.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, CURTIS DUNHAM, of New York, in the county and State of' New York, have invented a new and useful Transformation-Box, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a front view of the box containing my invention with the slide in one position. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the same ro with the slide in the other position. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the box having the slide in the same position as Fig. l, and Fig. 4 is a1ongitudinal section of Jthe same.
A is the box, the open top of which is formed diagonally on the line d b.
B is the cover, hinged to the box at a'.
C is a band extending all the way around the cover and free to reciprocate from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3 to the powWhen in the position shown in full lines, the band C holds the cover closed, as shown in full lines; but when in the position shown in dotted lines it permits it to open, as shown .in dotted lines.
D is a band that extends Vacross and overlies the face of the box.
E is a slide, with each edge of which the band C is connected, and which thus slides up and down as the band C is reciprocated. 3o Vhen the slide E is in its uppermost position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the upper half of it will be exposed to View above the band D and the lower half of it will be hid from view beneath that band. Vhen the slide E is in its lowermost position, as in Fig. 2, the upper portion of it will be hid beneath the band D and the lower portion of it will be exposed to View below that band. When the slide E is in its uppermost position, the face of the box 4o will be exposed to view below the band D, and
Serial No. 424,952. (No model.)
when the slide E is its lowermost position the face of the box will be exposed to View above the band D. It. is not necessary, however, that the band D should leave more than one space, nor that the spaces left by it should be confined to two, as shown.
By having an illustration appropriate for the 'central portion of two pictures on the band D and another part of one of those pictures on the upper half of the slide E and the upper part of the other of those pictures upon that part of the box which is exposed above the band D when the slide is moved down the picture presented on the face of the box .may be transformed, and by having the slide E connected with the band C this transformation is accomplished by the movement of the slide E necessary for opening the box. Thus, as in the drawings, when the box is closed, as in Fig. 1, the face of the box will present the picture of one individual with the words Our next President, whereas when the box is open, as in Fig. 2, theregwill be presented the picture of another individual with the words Is looking at you.
I claimp In combination, a box having a fragmentary picture, the cover thereof, a reciprocating member adapted to hold said cover closed in one position and to permit said cover to open in another position, and a slide connected with said member and having a fragmentary picture adapted to combine with the fragmentary picture on the box, substantially as described.
