R. OARDWELL 8v S. WATSON.
RAIL CHAIR AND COUPLING FOR PERMANENT WAYS. No. 478,899. Patented July 5, 1892.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
WATSON, OF MANCHES- TER, ENGLAND.
RAIL-CHAIR AND COUPLING FOR PERMANENT WAYS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,399, dated July 5, 1892.
Application filed January 12, 1892. Serial No. 417,895. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ROBERT OARDWELL, residing at Liverpool, and SAMUEL WATSON, residing at Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail-Chairs and Couplings for Permanent Ways, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in rail-chairs and couplings for permanent ways, (for which Letters Patent dated October 15, 1889, and numbered 412,834, were granted to 11s,) and in which invention the rail in its continuity or at its ends is secured, respectively, either to a single or joint chair by means of a hinged jaw, in combination with a metal wedge driven between the same and projections formed on the base of the chair.
The object of our invention is to render the said hinged jaw readily detachable, and thereby facilitate the placing and removal of the rail or rails on or from the chair, while at the same time the hinged jaw is prevented from becoming fast through corrosion and will adjust itself against and thus hold the rail more firmly than heretofore has been the case. We attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 a plan, of a rail-chair constructed in accordance with our invention and adapted to be secured to a sleeper. Fig. 3 is a sectional side view, and Fig. 4 a plan, of a chair with rail and hinged jaw removed. Figs. 5 and 6 are respectively a side view and back view of the hinged jaw itself detached.
Similarletters refer to similar parts through- 0 out the several views.
In carrying out our invention and referring to the figures generally we dispense with the bolt used heretofore to secure the movable jaw a to the baseb of the chair, and form the movable jaw aat each end with a pivot 0, (see more particularly Figs. 5 and 6,) preferably by casting a metal pin into the same, the ends of which project on each side thereof. The eyes 01 we form solid and the inner sides with a slotted socket e 8', adapted to receive the pivots c of the movable jaw a, when placed between the eyes (1, thus forming a slot-hinge. The wedge g, placed between the projections ornoses ff, when driven home forces the movable jaw a bodily against the side of the rail r, and when withdrawn the jaw a may be readily removed by throwing back and lifting it out of the socket e through slot 6'.
It will be understood that theim provements described are applicable for single as well as joint chairs either secured to or formedwith a sleeper.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In single and joint rail-chairs secured to or formed with a sleeper, the movable jaw or, having pivots c, in combination with eyes d, formed on the base b, the inner faces of which are formed with slotted sockets e 6, adapted to receive the pivots c and serve as afulcrum for the movable jaw a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed the 28th day of December, 1891.
