SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,371, dated July 5,1892.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. SHAW, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, haveinventedanewImprovement in Door-Checks; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a plan view of a pneumatic doorcheck constructed in accordance with my invention and shown as when the door is closed; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the plunger just before its engagement with the mouth of the cylinder; Fig. 3, a view of the device, partly in plan and partly in central horizontal section, showing the plunger after it has entered the cylinder; Fig. 4, a view in vertical transverse section on the line a b of Fig. 1, and showing the mouth of the cylinder and the ends of the bracket with their centering notches in alignment; Fig. 5, a detached view in front elevation of the bracket, showing the centering notches therein; Fig. 5, a broken view in side elevation of the outer end of the cylinder, showing the centering notches formed therein.
My invention relates to an improvement in pneumatic door-checks, the object being to.
produce a device combining simplicity and cheapness of construction with durability and convenience of adjustment.
With these ends in view my invention consists in the combination, with a cylinder, of a plunger, a stem therefor, a rocking carrier to which the inner end of the said stem is adj ustably secured, a bracket to which the carrier is pivoted, and one or more springs interposed between the bracket and carrier and engaging with the latter on opposite sides of its pivot and yielding to permit the carrier to swing to conform to the angle on which the cylinder and plunger go together and separate when the door carrying one of'them is opened and closed, whereby provision is made for permitting the stem to yield in either direction without interfering with its initial adj ustment for the right presentation of the plunger to the cylinder.
My invention further consists in certain detailsof construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
As herein shown, the cylinder A, which may be of any approved construction, is provided at one end with an adj usting-cap A, for regulating the entrance and escape of air, and at its outer end with a flaring mouth A It is also provided with means (not shown) on its under face for attaching it to a door or doorjamb, as circumstances may dictate. The plunger B, which may alsobe of any approved construction, is attached to the outer end of a rigid stem C, consisting of a rod, the inner end whereof is threaded and entered into a threaded socket formed in the outer end of a holder D, which is normally secured rigidly in any desired position of adjustment, and by means of a screw E to a two armed carrier F, which is hung on a vertical pivot G in a'bracket H, adapted to be secured either to a door I, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings or to a door-jamb, if circumstances so dictate. Two spiral springs J J, respectively interposed between the oppositely-projecting arms of the rocking carrier F,=and the bracket on opposite sides of the pivot G combine to normally hold the pivotal carrier with the arms thereof in line with the bracket.
These springs might, however, be replaced by a single spring engaging with the arms of the carrier on opposite sides of the pivot'on which it turns. So, too, the stem C and its holder D might be made in one piece, but the construction 'herein shown will probably be adopted.
In using my improved device the screw E is loosened and the holder D and hence the stem and plunger are set at an angle to the bracket required for causingthe plunger and the open mouth of the cylinder to come together properly when the door is closed. Then after they come together one of the springs J will yield to permit the plunger and stem to follow into the cylinder in right direction. The same spring will also yield when the door is opened. The spring that yields will be the spring that happens in the adjustment of the device to be nearest to the door-hinges; but it may often happen that owing to shrinkage in the door or its casing or to some other cause, the members of the door-check may be thrown out of true. It is therefore desirable that the plunger-stem should be free to yield in either direction to avoid wrenching the device by a collision of the plunger with the cylinder, and this my invention provides for in adapting the plunger-stem to so yield without interfering with its invariable return to its initial adjustment for right presentation.
The centering-notches 0. (shown by Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings) are designed to facilitate the right application of the plunger and cylinder members of the device to the door and door-jamb, one of the said members being secured in place and the other held up in place whilethe door is closed and adjusted until the notches of both members exactly coincide, when the unattached member is socured in place. The notches thus afford a very simple and convenient means of rightly putting up the device.
I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described; but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
I am aware that a pneumatic door-check having the inner end of the stem of its plunger pivotally connected with a bracket and held in position for the right presentation of the plunger to the cylinder by a spring located on one side of its pivot and an adjustable screw located on the opposite side thereof is old.
I am also aware that a pneumatic doorcheck having the inner end of its stein pivotally connected with a bracket and held in position for right presentation by a light concentric spring, permitting it to readjust itself every time the door is opened and closed, is old. I do not therefore broadly claim either a pivotal plunger-stem constructed to yield in one or both directions, but only my construction whereby the stem always returns to the position in which it was initially set, but yields under pressure in either direction to compensate for incidental changes in the relations of the parts not otherwise accounted for.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a cylinder, of a plunger, a stem therefor, a rocking carrier to which the inner end of the said stem is adj ustably secured, a bracket in which the carrier is pivoted, and one or more springs interposed between the bracket and carrier and engaging with the latter on opposite sides of its pivot and yielding to permit the stem to conform to the angle on which the cylinder and plunger come together when the door carrying one of them is opened and closed, substantially as described, and whereby provision is made for permitting the stem to yield in either direction without interfering with its initial adjustment for the right presentation of the plunger to the cylinder.
2. In a pneumatic door-check, the combination, with a cylinder, of a plunger, a stem therefor, a holder into which the inner end of the stem is mounted, a rocking carrier' to which the holder is adjustably secured, a bracket in which the said carrier is pivoted, and one or more springs interposed between the bracket and carrier and engaging with the latter on opposite sides of its pivot, substantially as described, and whereby provision is made for permitting the stem to yield in either direction without interfering with its initial adjustment for the right presentation of the plunger to the cylinder.
3. In a pneumatic door-check, the combination, with a cylinder, of a plunger, a stem therefor, a rocking carrier to which the inner end of the stem is adjustably secured to be set at any desired angle thereto, a bracket in which the said carrier is pivotally mounted, and two spiral springs respectively interposed between the bracket and the opposite ends of the carrier on the opposite sides of the pivot thereof, substantially as described, and whereby provision is made for permitting the stem to yield in either direction without interfering with its initial adjustment for the right presentation of the plunger to the cylinder.
4:. In a pneumatic door-check, the combination, with a cylinder, of a plunger therefor and a bracket carrying the said plunger, the ends of the said bracket and the outer ends of the mouth of the cylinder having centering-notches, substantially as set forth, whereby the said plunger and cylinder members of the device may be rightly attached to the door and door-jamb, substantially as described.
