Description

UNITED STATES GEORGE HALL, OF MORGANTOWN, WEST VIRGINIA.
IMPROVED IBREAD-SLICEFL Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 47,716, dated May 16, 1865.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE HALL, of Moraantown, in the county of Monongalia and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Device for Slicing Bread and other Substances; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, 'clear,'and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention; Fig. 2, a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a peculiar arrangement of levers and links combined with or applied to a knife and used in connection with a bed-piece, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the knife is made to work or operate with a drawing cut and a very simple, eiicient, and economical device for the purpose specified obtained.
A representsa horizontal bed-piece, which may be secured by screws or other means to a bench, table, or other fixture, said bedpiece having a pendent plate, B, secured to its under side longitudinally. (See Fig. 1.)
C C represent two bent levers, which4 are attached to the pendent plate B by fulcrumpins a, the latter passing through the angles .or bends of the levers. The lever C is right angular, or about that, in shape, the lever C being of such a shape that the two arms form an obtuse angle with each other, as shown in Fig. 1. These two levers C C are connected by a link, D, the latter being attached to the lower end of O' and to the upper end of C by pivots ax, and the upper arm of the lever O passes through a slot, b, in the bed-piece, and is connected by a pivot-bolt, c, to the outer end of the knife D. The lower end of the lever O is connected by a pivot, d, to Va link, E,
which passes up through a slot, e, in the bedpiece, and is connected to the knife D near its handle E by a pivot-bolt, f. By this arrangement of levers and links a drawing cutis given the knife D as the same is operated, and as the levers are below the bedpiece they do not serve as an obstruction, being entirely out ot' the way. The substance or article to be cut or sliced therefore may be handled and fed to the knife with the greatest facility.
The device may be manufactured at a small cost, it being composed of but few parts, and itvmay be secured either permanently to any suitable fixture or applied to and detached from a table or bench in a moment of time.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An implement or device for cutting or slicing bread, meat, and other substances, composed of levers and links applied to or connected with a knife and bed-piece, in the manner substantially as described.
GEORGE HALL.
