HOSE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,711, dated June '7, 1892.
Application filed November 3, 1891. Serial No. 410,721. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ANDREW WHELAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in HoseOouplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of hosecouplings in which eccentrics or levers are employed for forcing the abutting ends of the hose into intimate union, the object of the invention being to reduce the cost of construction and render the device more convenient, durable, and certain in its operations.
The invention consists in the improved hosecoupling and in the arrangements and combinations of parts, all substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure l is a side elevation of the improved coupling attached to the hose. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same, taken on line 11 Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken at line a, and Fig. is a plan which shows certain modifications that may be employed.
In said drawings, a a are the adjacent ends of a hose. Z) Z) are nozzles permanently and imperviously secured to said ends in any suitable manner, the said nozzles being preferably provided with shanks b b which fit closely within the here or water-passage of the hose, as indicated in Fig. 2, and c indicatesa packing, of rubber or other suitable material,
adapted to be inserted and held between the abutting extremities to secure an impervious joint.
The male nozzle b is provided with screwthreads If, and on the same is adjusted a collar (I, having catching-studs d on opposite sides of the hose. These extend from the nozzle laterally but not longitudinally forward beyond the extremity of the nozzle, and thus do not interfere with the coupling operations by preventing or obstructing the rapid arran gement of nozzle ends because of such on tension. On the nozzle 1) are integral or inserted pins 6, on which is pivoted a frame consisting of two lever-arms ff and a semicircular or curved finger-piece g, which also serves as a connector for said arms, so that they will move simultaneously and together. On said arms at points midway between the pivotal extremities and the connector g, so as to secure greater compactness and to cause the lever to draw the nozzles together and hold them so while the connecting finger-piece hugs the hose, is pivoted another frame consisting of hooked pivotal arms h h and a semicircular or curved finger-piece h, arranged to connect the two said arms It, so that they will work together with steadiness and certainty, the said curved connector or finger-piece h serving, also, in pressing the hook down into engagement with the studs or lugs d. The arms f are provided with extensions 72 which serve as finger-pieces in lifting the armsf upward in the operation of uncoupling, as will next be described. The finger-piece or connector g of the leverffg and the curved finger-piece h of the frame 77. 71. 72, are both on the same side of the hose or the nozzles thereof, and thus the hose may lie on the ground while manipulating said parts and need not be raised to admit of detachment, as in other cases in which two frames or levers are employed.
In operating the device to effect a coupling the frames are manipulated to bring the hooks into engagement with the studs (1, after which both finger-pieces h g are forced down so as to hug or lie against the hose and be out. of the way, which action causes the hooked arms to draw by a comparatively straight movement the sections of thehose into impervious engagement. To regulate the adjustment or to take up wear on the packing or washer c, I simply turn the collar d on the threaded nozzle, which operation changes the relation of the catching-studs to the hooks, so that when the parts are coupled greater or less pressure will be brought on the said packing. Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. The improved hose-coupling consisting of two nozzles, one of which is provided with adjustable lugs or studs (1, lying back from the end of its nozzle and serving as a catch, and the other with two levers, one of which is pivoted orfulcruined on the other and is provided with hooks to engage said studs, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The improved hose-coupling herein described, consisting of a threaded nozzle, a collar ad justably screwed thereon and provided with oppositely-disposed lugs or studs (1, and a nozzle 1), having aframe ff g pivoted thereon and provided with opposite extensions h h, serving as lifting finger-pieces, the said frame ffg having a hooked frame it h h pivoted thereon at points between the pivotal extremities thereof and the said lifting finger-pieces, said parts being arranged and combined substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In combination with the hose-sections a a, a threaded nozzle Z), a collar 61, adjusted on said nozzle and provided with studs (1, a nozzle 1), arms ff, pivoted on said nozzle 1) and having the curved connector g and fingerpiece extensions 7L2, and arms h h, pivoted on said arms ff and having hooks to engage said studs and having the curved finger-piece h, lying on the same side of the hose or nozzles with the fin ger-piece g, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of October, 1891.
ANDREXV \Vl-IELAN.
