Description

(No Model.) I
O. M. BARTHOLOMEW.
PUMP ROD COUPLING. No. 336,783. Patented Feb. 23, 1886.
Vl/ilnesses. 121 1/6 2120K UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES M. BARTHOLOMEV, OF PLAINWELL, MICHIGAN.
PUMP-ROD COUPLlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,783, dated February 23 1886.
Application filed December 8, 1885. Serial No. 185,035. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES M. BARTHOLO- MEW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainwell, county of Allegan, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Pump- Rod Coupling, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object an improved construction for detachably coupling pumprods, designed to facilitate the operation and add to the utility.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the coupling; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the lefthand part of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, aside elevation of the right-hand part of Fig. 1 and the coupling-band; Fig. 2, abottom view of Fig. 4; and Fig. 5 is the coupling-band in perspective.
Referring to the letters marked on the drawings, D and B are the ordinary castings, in the fork of which the sectional parts of the pump-rod P are secured. I provide the casting D with an extension,D,beveled on one side and tapered toward the free en(l,and I provide the casting B with an extension, B, beveled on one side and made substantially all the way of a size, the beveled sides of each extension D B being adapted to fit each other when lapped together as in Fig. 1, so that the coupled portion on which the thimble or coupling-band a is located will be larger at one end where it joins one section of the pump-rod, and smaller at the other end where it joins the other section of the pump-rod, thus having a gradual tapered form from one end to the other, so that the coupling-band, which is larger at one end, will slip over the lapped parts and bind them together, as in Fig. 1.
In uncoupling, the band a is slippedofl toward the small end of the coupled extension, as in Fig. 4. The extension B being substantially the same size at each end, the band a may be readily taken off or put on over the free end and slipped to place ready for coupling, as in Fig. 4. The lapped portions are provided with holes a and studs 0, the latter fitting into the former when the parts are coupled, thus adding strength to the coupled 7 Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- The combination of sections of pump-rod provided with end extensions constructed to overlap each other and to form when overlapped a tapered coupling-portion, the en-' gaging-surfaces of the overlapping extensions being provided with studs and holes adapted to fit into each other, and a coupling-band adapted to detachably slide over said lapping extensions, substantially as set forth.
I11 testimony of the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES ll. BARTl-IOLOMEW.
