MGYO-LXTHO. wAsK IN GYON. D C
NITED STATES PATENT OFFIC AUGI'FTIXE I SHERIDAN, OF YOUNGSTOIVN, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO ELLEN SHERIDAN, OF SAME PLACE.
HOSE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 559,911, dated May 12, 1896.
Applicatio filed S p ber 7, 1895. Serial No. 561,812, (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, AUGUSTINE B. SHERL DAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IIose-Oouplin gs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to hose-couplings.
The object of the invention is to provide a hose-coupling which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, and inexpensive of production, and by means of which hose may be easily and quickly coupled and uncoupled.
With these objects in view the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the coupling attached to sections of hose. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the coupling. Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing the nipple attached to a hydrant, and Fig. 5 is a view of another form of my invention.
In the drawings, 1 and 2 denote sections of hose provided with nipples 3 and at, respectively. The nipple 3 is provided with an annular collar 5, and the nipple 4: has a screwthreaded outer end (3.
The coupler consists of a sleeve 7, the forward portion of which is cut away, as shown at S, and is provided with a semicircular flange J, adapted to the collar 5 and the nipple 3. This sleeve is adapted to embrace the nipple l and is provided at its sides with lugs 10, to which are pivoted the arms 11 of a lever 12.
1 3 denotes a ring interiorly screw-threaded to engage the screw-threads 6 of the nipple l. Links ll are pivoted at their inner ends to the free ends 15 of the arms 11 of the lever 12 and have their outer ends pivoted to the ring 13.
16 denotes a washer which is seated in the recess 17 in the bore of the nipple 4.
In coupling the two sections of hose together the nipple 3 is placed in the open end of the sleeve, with the shoulder 5 in engage ment with the flange 9 of the sleeve. The lever is then swung forward, which draws the two nipples together, the interposed washer 16 serving to prevent the escape of water at the joints thus formed, and as the lever when swung forward is at a dead-center the hosesections will be prevented from becoming detached.
In Fig. 5 I have shown another form of link, which consists of a rod 18, the head of which is held in an apertured lug 19, pivoted to the forward ends of the arms of the lever. The inner end of the rod is provided with a screw thread 20, which engages a screwthreaded lug 21, pivoted to the ring 13.
22 denotes a thumb or wrench nut fixed to the rod. This construction afifords means for tightening the joint into the nipples should the lever 12 fail to bring them close enough together-that is to say, should there be a leak after the lever has been swung forward to couple the parts the rod 18 may be rotated to draw the parts more firmlytogether to stop the leak. This may be done either bymeans of the hand or by a wrench, as the case may require.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In ahose-coupling, the combination with the nipples of the adjacent ends of two hosesections, one of said nipples being provided with an annular collar, of a coupling com prising a sleeve the outer end of which is cut away, and provided with a semicircular flange to engage the aforesaid collar, a ring, a lever pivoted to the said sleeve, and links pivotally connected to said ring and to the outer ends of said lever, substantially as set forth.
2. In a hose-coupling, the combination with the nipples of the adjacent ends of two hosesections, of a coupling to clamp the nipples together, said coupling consisting of a sleeve adapted to engage one nipple, a ring connected with the other nipple, a lever pivoted to the sleeve, and adjustable links connecting the ends of the lever to said sleeve, substantially as set forth.
In a hose-coupling, the combination with the nipples of the adjacent ends of two hosesections, of a coupling to clamp the nipples together, said coupling consisting of a sleeve adapted to be connected with :the nipple of one of the hose-sections, a ring connected with the nipple of the other hose-section a lever having bifurcated ends pivoted to the sleeve intermediate their length, links connected to the extreme ends of the bifurcated lever and to the ring, said links consisting of rods hav-% ing heads at one end which are secured to IO lugs pivoted to the free ends of the lever and provided with screw-threads at their outer ends which are engaged with the screwthreaded lugs secured'tothe ring and a thumb AUGUSTINE B. SHERIDAN.
