SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,526, dated June '7, 1892.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES HUGH Donne, of Eau Claire, county of Eau Claire, and State of \Visconsimhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Hot- "Water Heaters; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to hot-water heaters; and it has for its object to provide a device I 5 of this class which shall be simple in con struction and eflicient in operation and in which the Hues and headers through which the water circulates shall be so constructed and arranged as to provide an extensive heating-surface.
The invention further consists in certain details of construction, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a water-heater constructed in accordance with my invention, one of the side doors being open, so as to eX- pose the interior construction. Fig. 2 is a 3 5 longitudinal vertical sectional view taken on the line 2 2 in Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the upper portion of the de- 5 vice, showing the same on a larger scale for the purpose of showing the construction more clearly.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
The front header is provided with openings, having doors 10 and 11, that communicate, respectively, with the lire-box and with the ashpit. The connecting fines or pipes 7 are arranged at the sides of the fire-box and in several tiers or series above the latter, the uppermost series being arranged across the lower end of the exit-flue 12, which leads to the smoke-stack. Baffle-plates 13 are arranged between the upper tiers or series of pipes for the purpose of causing the products of combustion to take a circuitous course in their passage through the heater.
The sides of the heater-casing are provided with doors 14, through which access may be had to the circulating-pipes for the purpose of cleaning the latter. The doors let are provided near their lower edges with flanges or deflectors 15 for the purpose of preventing cold air from passing upwardly from the ash pit between thedoors l4.- and the adjacent circulating-pipes. The sides of the casing are provided below the doors Ll with dampers 16 for the admission of air to support combustion. Dampers, as 17, are also arranged in the doors l0 and 11.
' 18 designates the grate, which is composed of independent grate-bars supported upon rock-shafts 19, having downwardly-extending arms or cranks 20, which are connected at their lower ends by a pivoted rod 21. The front rock-shaft 19 is also provided with an upwardly-extending lever 22, by means of which a vibrating motion maybe imparted to the rock-shaft for the purpose of shaking the grate. A sitter 23 is supported upon a vibrating frame 24, which is suspended by means of links 25 within the ash-pit above the ash-pan 26.
27 designates a rock-shaft, which is mounted in bearings 28 upon the inner side of the rear header. The rock-shaft 27 is provided with downwardly and forwardly extending arms 28, that rest upon the rear ends of the gratebars and are connected with the latter by means of pivoted links 29. It will be seen that the arms 28 virtually form a part of the grate, and that when the latter is shaken a shaking or Vibrating motion is also imparted to the rock-shaft having the said arms. The essential function of the latter is to keep the fire out of contact with the rear header, to which the inlet-pipe or return-pipe is connected, as shown at 30, and which is therefore chilled to such an extent as to damp the fire at this point. By this arrangement of the arms 28 the fire is kept away from this portion of the rear header and air from the ashpit is permitted to pass in an upward direction in rear of the grate-bars, thus accelerating the fire at this point. The exit-pipes 31 are attached to the top of the casing.
The operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The front and rear heads are connected in the manner described by the circulating-pipes, which are so arranged as to surround the tire-box. The products of combustion will be forced by the bathe-plates 18 to take a circuitous course between the several tiers or series of pipes which are arranged in the upper part of the casing, and the contents of said pipes will thus be thoroughly heated before passing out through the outer pipes 31. The general construction and arrangement of parts are simple and inexpensive, and the interior parts of the device may be easily reached for cleaning or repairlng purposes.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the United States- 1. Theconibination, with the opposite heads or water spaces having perforations and bosses threaded with right-hand threads on one head and with left-hand threads on the other, of the horizontal pipes or tubes which are screw-threaded to fit the same and arranged therein to form the sides and bottom of the fire-box and clamping said heads together, substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the heads having openings surrounded by bosses provided with inner shoulders and a supplemental series of threaded openings, packing mounted upon the said shoulders surrounding the openings within the bosses, horizontal circulating-pipes having their ends fitting within the opposite shouldered bosses, and a series of clamping and circulating pipes having threaded ends engaging said threaded openings in the opposite heads for clamping the heads together, thereby forcing the ends of said pipes against the packing, which is protected from burning by the ends of the tubes and the bosses by being in contact with the water, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the heads or waterspaces, the pipes or tubes connecting the same and forming the sides and top of the fire-box, the casing having the ash-pit, and the side doors provided near their lower edges with flanges to prevent air from passing from the ash-pit in an upward direction between said doors and the adjacent pipes or tubes, substantially as set forth. 7
