Description

P. B. JORDAN. WRENCH.
PatentedJune 7, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK B. JORDAN, OF AUBURN, MAINE.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,465, dated June 7, 1892. Application filed January 25, 1892. Serial No. 419,153. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK B. JORDAN, of Auburn,in the conntyof Androscoggin,State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a description sufi'iciently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wrench, and Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the d rawin gs.
My invention relates especially to a combined nut or monkey wrench and oiler designed particularly for use with vehicles; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simpler, cheaper, and more effective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation.
In the drawings, A represents the body or shank of the wrench, one end of which is enlarged at h and chambered to form a nutsocketf. At the opposite end of the shank A a laterally-arranged crank-handle B is formed. Said handle is approximately V-shaped, its outer or free end g being in the same plane as the end of the shank. The shank is chambered longitudinally at h, opening through its handle end for containing oil. The mouth of essential to handle the nut.
the oil-chamber is countersunk at i and interiorly screw-threaded to receive a screwplug m, whereby it is closed. A washer p is journaled by the plug into the countersink to prevent the oil leaking through the threads. The shank A and handle B are circular in cross-section.
The wrench is designed to be carried in the vehicle. The chamber h is filled with oil. To remove the axle-nut, the shank A is grasped in the hand and the socketfdisposed on the nut. The Wrench is then rotated in the hand by means of the crank-handle B until the nut is turned 0d. By removing the plug m oil may be deposited on the axle-arm in the usual manner. The handle B affords sufficient leverage for turning the nut, while the device obviates the objections incident to the use of the ordinary monkey-Wrench with which it is The peculiar shape of the crank-handle renders the device more compact and readily stored than is the usual right-angled crank employed.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is In a nut-wrench, the elongated shank A, having the nut-socketfin one end and the V- handle at the opposite end, arranged as de scribed, the oil-chamber h in said shank opening through the end at the handle and provided with the interiorly screw threaded mouth countersunk at 2'. the packing p in said countersink, and the screw-plug m, turned into said mouth, substantially as described.
