Description
UNITED STATES SLOCUM, OF
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 47,606, datedMay 2, 1865.`
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. SLocUM, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented i an Improvement in the Manufacture of Metal Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists in the manner, described hereinafter, of securing together the two ends of a strip of tin, so that thesarne may be used for the side of a box such as is used for containing blacking and other materials. l
In order to enable others to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe the mannerof carrying it into effect.
On reference tothe accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speciiication, Figure l represents a strip of tin to .be formed into the side -of the box; Fig. 2, a sectional view showing the strip as bent, preparatory to the fastening together of the ends; Fig. 3, the same with the ends secured together, and
Fig 4 a perspective view showingthe form of the two ends of the strip.
Similar letters referto similar parts througha out the several views.
A is a strip of tin, the width of which is equal to the height of the box intended to be made, and the length ofi which is such that when the ends are secured together it will form a circle of the desired diameter of the box. One end of the strip is cut away to a point on PATENT FFIC PHILADELPHIA, rENNsYLvANIAQAss s.-MAsoN a co., or sAMn PLAGE,
to the lip a. `In the opposite end `ofthestr Tanon` `fro .LA ,Esi
. i This P0 i 1 end is bent upward.; `1In th's end of ,the strip; is also made a triangularcriice, .'10, themet partly punched from the strip informing this orifice being turned upward, as fshownin Fi 4, and presenting anangular lip, a', parallel each side, so as to forma lip, a.
are two transverses'lots, e e', intowhich the said lips a a are fitted after the stripof `tin has been bentin the formof a circle, n in Fig. 3, after which the lips are bent down in contrary directions, and y the y joint l t formed is completed" `by a sharpblow hammer orrnallet.l "It will beappar` the strip may be readilycutto the shap y, a essary to form the desired joint without he aid of complicated and expensive mach y, and that the joint is simple, eiective, and may 1l be made secure without the aidf of solder or,` i rivets. f Y l l ""1 I claim as my invent-ion and desire t se re y scribing witnesse a y Witnesses: x y, r,
