SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,896, dated May 31, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J ULIUs SCHIRRA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grips; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved means for preventing cable-gri p frames from wearing; and it consists in inserting pieces of hardened steel at certain points of the frame and providing a means for holding the same securely in position, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a cable-grip frame provided with my improved device for preventing the same from wearing, together with a means for confining the same in position. Fig. 2 is an end view of a portion of a grip, and also shows a portion of the conduit slot-rails and gripper in section.
In the use of cable-grip frames it has been found in practice that the same will wear sufficient in a short time to renderthe same useless. This wear is all in a direct line across the frame, and is caused by the sharp edges of the slot being in frictional contact with the rapidly-moving frame. To obviate this and lessen the wear of the frame 1 two circular openings 2 are formed at suitable positions in the downwardly-extending legs 3 of the same. Fitted in these openings 2 are two hardened-steel disks 4, which are slightly greater in thickness than the legs of the frame 1, and the said disks 4 are made to occupy a position which will bring the same beyond the surface on either side of the frame and are so arranged to prevent the said frame from contact with the sides of the slot-irons. To confine these disks in this position, two caps 6 are secured to the frame by means of short bolts 7. These caps are arranged on either side of the frame and are made to project slightly over the disks in a manner that will leave the said disks free to turn within the frame, which will distribute the Wear evenly about the disks.
It is obvious that these disks may be of any desired size or that the shape may be altered to square, diamond, or to any desired form.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Paten t, is-
The herein-described device for preventing or lessening the Wear on cable-grip frames,
consisting of disks of hardened steel inserted vertically in openings in the frame at the points of contact with the slot-irons, and suitable means t'or holding said pieces in position. In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto affix my signature this 21st day of November, A. D. 1891.
