SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent N 0. 475,882, dated May 31, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, NANCY E. MILES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Corset, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to corsets; and it has for its object to provide an improved corset which, while answering all the requirements of ordinary corsets, at the sametime possesses many advantages which are essential features in devices of this character.

Among the principal objects aimed for by this invention is to provide a corset which dispenses with the ordinary lacing on the back, and thus avoids imperfect tits of dress by showing imprints through the dress and tending to interfere with free and easy respiration; also, adj ustment for the corset is provided at each side of the center and front, so that the adj ustment at the waist can be readily had, together with the amount of pressure over the breasts. The corset, also, is sufficiently elastic to allow for perfect freedom of motion, and is so constructed that creasing the form across the shoulders is effectually prevented, as well as giving perfect support to the back and being easily and quickly adjusted.

IVith theseand many other objects in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists in a corset constructed in themanner hereinafter more 'fully described, illustrated, and claimed.

, In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a corset constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a back View of the saine.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents a corset-body madeof any suitable material and having the usual bones and steels to give the requisite stiffness and strength to the same. The said corset-body comprises the continuous rear-and-sides section B and the two front sections C, which front sections are fastened at their meeting edges c by the ordinary fastening devices in the front and center of the body. As 'illustrated, it will be seen that the bacleandsides section is continuously connected together without lacing or connections of any description, as in the ordinary corsets, and therefore the said back-and-sides section strictly conforms to the contour of the body and snugly fits the same, thereby avoiding objectionable projecting lacing or other fastening devices and at the same time strengthening and supporting the back. The sides B of the said continuous back-and-sides section are provided With elastic gores B2, directly under the arnrpits and over the hips, which allow for a perfect freedom of movement to give to all motions of the body. The connected front sections O meet the sides B on each side of the center and front of the body and in a vertical line with the nipples. The said sections are connected with the sides portions B by inelastic lacing D, extending from a point at the bottom of the breast enlargements E to the bottom of the corset, and thus provides means for the requisite adjustment at the waist, according to the requirements of the person. The meeting edges of said frontsection with the side portion at the breast enlargements E are connected by the elastic lacings F, extending from the beginning of the lacings D to the top of the corset, and thus provide means for regulating the amount of pressure over the breasts at the will of the lt is now thought that the construction, use, and many advantages of the herein-described corset are apparent without description.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The corset comprising the back-and--sides section, having its edges extendingto the front of the body in a vertical line with the bust portions, and two front sections detachably connected with each other and meeting said back-and-sides section in said vertical line with the bust portions, non-elastic lacings connecting the meeting edges of said front and back-and-sides section from a point immediately below the bust to the lower edge of the corset, and elastic lacings connecting the bust portions from said point to the upper edge of the corset, substantially as specified.
