Description

(No Model.)
B. HAIMAN. WHIPFLETREB.
No. 475,780. Patented May 24, 1892.
WTNESSES- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIAS HAIMAN, on ATLANTA, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR TO SIGMUND LANDAUER, OF SAME PLACE.
WHlFFLETREE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 475,730, dated May 24, 1892.
Application filed October 12, 1891. Serial No. 408,509. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELIAS HAIMAN, of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whi'ffietrees; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refer- Io ence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to whiffletrees, havin gparticular reference to the securing there I 5 in on the draft ring or hooks to which to hitch the traces, the object of this invention being to obtain this result without weakening the whiffltree, and by means which cannot become disengaged under the greatest strain,
the details of allof which are hereinafter fully specified.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan of the device, showing the form of the whiffletree and at the left end a hole opened for the insertion of the ring or hooks, and at the other end the ring or hooks is inserted and the hole closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the whiffletree, as shown at the left end in Fig. 1, further showing the details.
Fig. 3 is an end View of the left end of Fig. 1, showing the hole open for the insertion of the ring or hook; and Fig. 4 is an end View of the right-hand end of Fig. 1, showing the ring or hook inserted and the hole closed.
5 In the figures like characters of reference indicate corresponding elements of construction in all the Views.
A is the Whiffietree proper, which is formed of a flat metallic strip tapering on its back edge from its middle to both ends, and being provided on its front edge with the beads or flanges a. The clevis hook or eye a is suitably secured at the middle thereof. The holes a are punched ineach end close to the head a, and the metal on the back side of said hole between it and the back edge of the whi'ffietree is severed, said out being lettered a in the drawings. \Vhen said slit is in the position shown, it is obvious that it does not weaken the whiiiletree in any point where strain would ever be applied, and it is also plain that in a direct end pull on the whiflietree the removal of the ring would be resisted by a braced hook 0. also, the holes a being near the bead a the ring will not be worn to a ma- 5; terial degree, as its bearingsurface is long.
This device is simple and inexpensive of construction, and the ring can be removed or replaced by any person with the aid of a hammer or wrench, and when in place it is, as has been demonstrated, capable of resisting extraordinary strains in any direction, easily resisting any strain which would ever be applied thereto in practice.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, a whiffletree consisting of a flat metallic strip and the beads formed on each side of its forward edge, the said metallic strip being pierced near its ends immediately back of the said beads and slotted from the perforations backward through the strip, the portions separated by the perforations and slots from the main portion of the strip being curved upwardly at their rear ends, and the hooks carried in the said perforations, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
ELIAS HAIMAN.
