UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
GEORGE A. ANDERSON, OE GREENWOOD, MASSACHUSETTS.
DOUBLE DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent YNo. 475,531, dated May 24, 1892.
Application filed January 27, 1892. Serial No.419,380. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, GEORGE A. ANDERSON, of Greenwood, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Double Doors for Elevators, &c., of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a speciication, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
Elevator-cars for buildings are commonly provided with one, or it may be two, slidedoors, according to the locations of the landings leading into the elevator-well. In ordinary passenger-work the Opening of one-half of a side wall ot' an elevator-car is sufficient; but at other times the elevator is not available for a special duty or freight because of the width of the slide-door.
In my experiments to render the elevatorcar fully available to receive and carry a larger object than can be put through the usual slide-door I have provided part of the side wall of the car with a hinged door, which at one side is provided with a suitable track, on which may run the roll or trucks for the sliding door, the said trucks running from the tracks on the hinged door upon an independent stationary track substantially in continuation of the tracks on the hinged door.
In accordance with my invention in ordinary Work the hinged door will be kept closed and fastened, and the sliding door when opened will run upon the track carried by the hinged door, the sliding door running oit' of the track of the hinged door when the said sliding door is closed. It, however, the whole side of the car is to be opened, then the operator, when the sliding dooris open, will open the hinged door about its hinges, thus swinging it and the slide-door carried by it out of the elevator.
My invention consists, essentially, in the combination, with a car having a hinged door and a track, of a sliding door provided with sheaves and an independent track, the slidedoor when opened running on the track of the hinged door and when closed running off the track of the hinged door upon the independent track, substantially as will be described.
Figure 1 in side elevation shows a sufcient portion ot' a car of the class used in elevators and my improved double door. Fig.V 2 is a section in the line Eig. l, and Fig. 3 is an inner side view of the parts shown in Fig. 1.
The car-body A is and may be of any usual or suitable material, size, or shape, and either for passenger-elevators or for other purposes.
The sill or threshold of the doorway for a distance equal to the space covered by the sliding door b has a track b', on which runs the roll b2 of the said sliding door when the latter is closed.
The door C is connected to the casing or body A of the car by suitable hinges c c. The door C will be provided with some suitable fastening device, as a bolt c', one or more. The hinged door at its inner side near its lower end has a track d, on which runs the roll hboth rolls b2 b3 coming upon said track d when the sliding door is fully opened.
To guide the upper end of the sliding door, especially when the hinged door is open, I have provided the upper end of the hinged door with a suitable guide, as c, which engages or overlaps more or less of the topof said door b. I may also provide the door C with a pocketpiece D, to receive one edge of the door b when the latter is opened, the pocket aiding in retaining the two doors together when the hinged door is opened.
It will be obvious that my invention is applicable for use on all sort-s of cars and in all sorts of doorways.
I-Iaving described my invention, what I lclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. A hinged door provided with a track, combined with a sliding door adapted to run off and on the track of the hinged door, substantially as described.
2. Adoor-casinghavingatrack atits threshold and a hinged door closing part of said casing and having a' track, combined with a sliding door having rollers and adapted to run along over one and the other of said tracks as the sliding door is opened or closed, the sliding door when open being wholly supported on the hinged door, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE A. ANDERSON.
