SAFETY GUIDE-BRACKET FOR CAR-DOORS.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 30, 1905.
Patented June 12; 1906.
Serial No. 284,947.
full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. I
My invention relates to metal brackets which are used for guiding-the lower edges of the sliding doors of freight-cars so as to properly direct the movements of such doors into and out of closed position and also serve to prevent the outward or upward movement of the door..
The object of my invention is to produce a simple, durable, and economical bracket or guide which shall efl'ectually guide the door into and out of closed position and prevent it from being pried upward and outward.
A further object of my inventionis to so secure the guides or brackets to the body of the car by suitable fastening means as to conceal and prevent access to such fastenings' when the door is closed, thus rendering it impossible to remove the bracket or guide.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a car-door, showing my improved guide in position; Fig. 2, a sectional view; Fig. 3, a top plan View of my improved guide, and Fig. 4 a front elevation thereof.
My invention consists of a casting comprising a grooved ortion a, having front and rear walls e and and a bottom wall it and lip i, projecting inwardly from the wall 6. As shown in Fig. 4, the rear wall d is inclined laterally and has extending from its upper edge a flange a, parallel to the bottom of the grooved portion. This flange extends at an angle to the wall d and is adapted to rest on top of the side sill of the car and that part of the sheathing under the door-opening and next to the door-post. By connecting the flange c with the grooved portion a by means of the inclined wall the center of the grooved portion is made to set even with the inner side of the door-post, the guide thus serving to hold the door securely against the side of the car whether the door be opened or closed. The front wall e and its lip below described, of the grooved portion is curved inwardly, as indicated in Fig. 3, and serves to ress the car-door tightly against the side 0' the car.
The lip '5 extends inwardly from the upper edge of the wall 6. Its function will be hereinafter more fully described Extending downwardly from the lower face of the wall h is a flange or projection g, having a hole 0, and a bolt Zruns laterally through this flange and the side sill of the ear. The top flange c is provided with holes 76 7c, through which lagscrews or other suitable fastenings are inserted into the side sill. Extending from the projection g to the wall a are ribs f, which form braces for the guide-bracket.
In use the guide-bracket is secured to the side sill by means of flanges c and g, thescrews ink, and the bolt Z, as before described. The car-door is' provided with a suitable guide-rail m, provided at one end with a short outwardly-turned lip or flange n. When the door is closed, this lip or flange is disposed beneath the lip '21 on the guide-bracket.
It will be readily ,understood that when the door is'inlocked or closed position the lagscrews fastening the top flange c to the sill are entirely concealed inside the car, thus rendering it impossible to gain access to the screws for the pupose of removing the guidebrackets. It will also be understood that that part of the guide-rail provided with the lip or flange will rest in the door-guide i bracket and under I the projection or lip thereon when the door is closed, thus rendering it impossible to pry the door-rail upward and outward for the purpose of gaining admission to the car.
' Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isr 1. A guide-bracket comprising in its construction a grooved portion bathing trout and rear vertical walls and a horizontal inwardlyprojecting lip on the front vertical wall, said wall and lip being curved inward, substantially as described.
2. A'guidebracket comprising in its construction a grooved portion having a laterally-inclined rear wall and a flange extending from the rear wall in a direction opposite the grooved portion and parallel therewith, sub;
stantially as described.
3. In combination, a door, a guide-rail thereon, provided with an outwardly-turned lip or flange, a guide-bracket having a grooved portion, one wall of which is provided with an inwardly-turned lip overhanging the lip on the track, substantially as described.
4. A guide-bracket comprising in its construction a Vertically-disposed att-achingan inwardly-extending lip, the 0111101 verbiml flange, an offset portion, an outer Vertical flange and its' lip being curved inwardiv, sub- 10 flange at right angles to the offset po 'tion, a st antially as described. letel'ally-inplineel flange foinnng W113i the EDMOND l XXI-ms outer XOItlCili flange and oITset portion a guide-groove, and a horizontally-disposed Witnesses:
Henge extending from the inclined flange, H. J. KESSLER,
said outer vertical flange being formed with L. N. BARGER.
