SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,459, dated May 24, 1892.

To all whom t may concern..-
Be it known that I, THOMAS MEIKLE, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Heating-Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in heating-boilers, the object being to effect a more rapid circulation of the water or generation of steam, as the case may be, and to obtain greater economy in fuel than was possible with the boilers or heaters heretofore devised.
With this object in view my invention consists in certain features of construction and in combinations of parts hereinafter described, and `pointed out in the claims. In the accompanying drawings, illustrating a preferable construction of boiler embodying my invention, Figure l is a left-hand side elevation of the same with the inclosing brick casing in section. Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively a rear and a front elevation with the inclosing casing removed. Fig. 4 is a side elevation in section on line 4 4, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on line 5 5, Fig. 4.
A represents the inclosing casing, that in the present instance is of brick, easing A being provided in the usual manner with doors in front for firing and access to the interior, &c. The rear wall of the casing is provided with openings for the reception of rearwardlyextending flues B B', that are located the one above the other and connect with an upright flue O, flue B being provided with a damper, as at b.
D represents suitable frames or standards for supporting the superstructure,said frames or standards being provided with inwardlyprojecting flanges d for supporting the grate E,that is of any suitable and well-known construction.
G represents a Water box or reservoir that surrounds the fuel-chamber I-I and constitutes the base of the superstructure.
I represents awater-bridge that rests upon the rear portion of water-box G and extends to near the top of the inclosing casing A. Water-bridge I is preferably square or rectangular in shape, according to the dimensions of the boiler or heater, and is provided at its lower end and preferably at the central portion thereof with a flanged opening I', the iiange being screw-threaded externally for screwing into a correspondinglyand internally screw-threaded opening g' in the rearwardly and centrally enlarged portion g of rear member 6 of water box or reservoir G. The forward member 7 of reservoir G has connected therewith several heating and circulating tubes, that in the present instance are arranged in two rows, each row comprising three tubes at either side of the central portion of member 7 of reservoir G, .I and K representing the tubes in the respective rows. Tubes .I and K extend to near the top of the boiler, where they connect with rearwardly-extending horizontal tubes J K', respectively, that discharge into the water-bridge I, tubes K' being located below tubes J'.
VVater-bridge I has connected therewith, preferably, vertical tiers of horizontal heating and circulating coils L, the coils extending lengthwise the boiler and preferably to near the forward end of the boiler, the pipe of the coils, excepting the coils located immediately above the grate or fuel-chamber, being in open relation with Water-bridge I at different elevations, as at Z Z'. The drawings exhibit nine tiers of coils and there being preferably as many coils in a tier as it is possible to have with the size of boiler orheater employed. The coils located immediately above the grate or fuel-chamber are connected by an upright tube L2 with rear member 6 of reservoir G, and are in open relation with water-bridge I, as at Z'. Water-bridge I has also connected and in open relation therewith rearwardly-extending short heating. and circulating tubes M, that are longitudinally divided by a horizontal or approximately horizontal diaphragm M' to near the rear or closed end of the tubes. The water-bridge at the upper end is provided with any desired number of distributing-pipes N for conducting off the heated water or steam, as the case may be.
N represents the return-pipes that are connected, preferably, with one of the side members of reservoir G as near the bottom of the latter as is possible.
Damper b should only be opened in start- IOO ing the tire, and of course when open the products of combustion and a large share of the heat will pass through flue B; but when closed the products of combustion are obliged to pass through flue B', and the heat is practically all retained Within the boiler. IVhether damper b is open or closed,however, in either case the products of combustion are rst obliged to pass among the heating and circulating tubes and coils forward of the Waterbridge; but of course the escape of the products ofcombustion is much more rapid when damper b is open than when said damper is closed, and with the damper closed the products of combustion are also compelled to pass among the heating and circulatingtubes at the rear and down the rear surface of the water-bridge, and hence the heatof the products of combustion is utilized to-the'utmost degree.
The economical results of my improved construction of boiler, it is believed,are quite apparent, as by the arrangement of parts shown an immense heating-surface is obtained and all the heat of the fuel substantially utilized.
My improved boiler, it will be observed, is also exceedingly simple in construction, and consequently can be quickly erected Without incurring much expense.
The circulation of the water, it is believed, will be readily understood; but arrows have been applied in the drawings to assist tracing of the circulation.
I would remark that I have reduced my invention to practice, and the boiler has proved about again as economical in fuel asthe heat ing-boilers heretofore devised.
What I claim is` l. In aheating-boiler,an inclosing casing,a water box or chamber arranged about the grate or fuel-chamber, a Water-bridge in open relation with the rear portion of said Water box or chamber, heating and circulating tubes connecting said water box or chamber and water-bridge, and one or more distributing pipes connected with the water-bridge, substantially as set forth.
2. In a heating-boiler, an inclosing casing, a water box or chamber surrounding the grate orfuel-chamber, a Water-bridge located at the rear portion of and in open relation With said water box or chamber, heating and circulating tubes connecting said Water box or chamber and Waterbridge, heating and circulating coils located above the fuel-chamber within the inclosing casing and in open relation with said water-bridge, and one or more distributing-pipes connected with said water-bridge, substantially as set forth.
3. In a heating-boiler, an inclosing casing, a water box or chamber surrounding the grate or fuel-chamber, a Water-bridge located at the rear portion of and in open relation with said water box or chamber, heating and circulating tubes connecting said Water box or chainber and water-bridge, heating and circulating tion of the water box or chamber and con,
nected with the water-bridge at the upper portion of the latter, heating and circulating coils located above the fuel-chamber within the inclosing casing and in open relation with the water-bridge and heating and circulating tubes located at the rear of and in open relationwith the Water-bridge, and one or more distributing-pipes connected with the waterbridge, substantially as set forth.
5. In a heating-boiler, an inclosing casing, a water box or chamber surrounding the grate or fuel-chamber, a water-bridge at the rear portion and in open relation with said water box or chamber, heating and circulating tubes connected with the front and rear portions of said water box or chamber and in open relation with the water-bridge at different elevations, respectively, horizontal heating and circulating coils located forward of and in open relation with said Water-bridge, and one or more distributing-pipes connected with said water-bridge, substantially as set forth.
G. In a heating-boiler, an inclosing casing, a water box or chamber surrounding the grate or fuel-chamber, awater-bridge located at the rear portion andin open relation with said water box or cl1amber,upright heating and circulating tubes connected with the forward portion of said water box or chamber and connected with the upper portion of the Waterbridge, horizontal or approximately horizon tal heating and circulating coils located for- Ward of and in open relation with said Waterbridge, one or more of said coils connecting with the water box or chamber aforesaid, and one or more distributing-pipes connected with said Water-bridge, substantially as set forth.
7. In a heating-boiler, an inclosing casing, two tlues in open relation with the interior of the boiler at the rear thereof and located in different horizontal planes relative to each other, the upper flue being provided with a damper, a water box or chamber surrounding the grate or fuel-chamber, a water-bridge at the rear portion of and in open relation with said Water box or chamber and heating and circulating tubes connected with the forward portion of said water box or chamber and connected with the upper portion of the waterbridge, horizontal or approximately horizontal heating and circulating coils located forward of and in open relation with the waterbridge, one or more of said coils being connected with the rear portion of the water box or chamber aforesaid, heating and circulating IIO tubes located at the rear of and in open relation with the water-bridge, and one or more distributing-pipes connected with said waterbridge, substantially as set forth.

In a heating-boiler, an inclosing casing, two ilues in open relation with the interior ot' the boiler at the rear thereof and located the one above the other, the upper iluebeing provided with a damper, a waterbox or chamber surrounding the grate or fuel-chamber, a water-bridge at the rear portion of and in open relation with said water box or chamber, heating and circulating tubes connected with the forward portion of said water box or chamber and connected with the upper portion of the water bridge, horizontal or approximately horizontal heating and circulating coils located forward of and in open relation with the water-bridge, one or more of said coils located immediately above the fuel-chamber and being connected with the rear portion of the water box or chamber aforesaid, heating and circulating tubes located at the rear of and in open relation with the water-bridge, one or more distributing-pipes conn ected with said water-bridge, and one or more returnpipes connecting with the Water box or chamber aforesaid, substantially as fet forth.
9. In a heating-boiler, an inclosing casing, a water box or chamber surrounding the grate or fuel-chamber, a water-bridge at the rear portion of and in open relation with said water box or chamber, upright heating or circulating tubes connected with the forward portion of said water box or chamber and connected with the upper portion of the waterbridge, vertical tiers of horizontal or approximately horizontal heating and circulating coils located forward of the Water-bridge above the grate or fuel-chamber, one or more of said coils conuectin g with the water-bridge and Water box or chamber, and the remainder of said coils being in open relation with said waterbridge at different elevations, heating and circulating tubes located at the rear of and in open relation with said water-bridge and being divided longitudinally by horizontal or approximately horizontal diaphragms that extend to near the rear end of said tubes, one or more distributing-pipes connected with the water-bridge, and one or more return-pipes connecting with the water box or chamber aforesaid, substantially as set forth.
10. In a heating-boiler, an inclosing casing, a water box or chamber surrounding the grate or fuel-chamber, a water-bridge located at the rear portion of said water box or chamber, heating and circulating tubes connected with the forward portion of the water box or chamber and connected with the upper portion of the water-bridge, heating and circulating coils located forward of and in open relation with the Water-bridge, one or more of said coils being in open relation with the water box or chamber, the water box or chamber having a rearwardly-projecting member, and the water-bridge having a flanged opening, the flange being externally screw-threaded for screwing into a correspondingly and internally screw-threaded hole in the rearwardly-pro jectiug member aforesaid of the water box or chamber, and one or more distributing-pipes connected with the Water-bridge, substantially as set forth.
