WATER BACK FOR STRAW BURNING FURNAOES.
No. 498,686. Patented May 30, 1893.
A f IV" UNITE STATES ATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES NYE, OF NEl/VMAN, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH'TO JULES CAIN, OF SAME PLACE.
WATER-BACK FOR STRAW-BURNING FURNACES.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,686, dated May 30, 1893.
Application tiled February 15, 1893. Serial No. 462,484. (No model.)v
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.- j n Be it known that I, CHARLES NYE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newman, in
the county of Stanislaus and State of California, have invented a new and usefulA Water- Back for Straw-Burning Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to straw-burning boiler furnaces; and it has for its objectto provide an improved water-back for boiler furnaces of this character, whereby the com plete consumption of the straw will beinsured, thus avoiding the many objections to furnaces of this character, owing to the fact that the light combustibles are carried by the strong draft into the i'lues of the boiler in an unconsumed condition. c
To this end the invention primarily contemplates an improved circulating coil, employed as a water-back particularly for the furnaces or tire boxes of upright tubular boilers generally employed in connection with traction engines for agricultural purposes, and with this in view the invention contemplates an improvement which renders straw burning more practicable.
With these and many other objects in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:-Figure l is a central vertical sectional view of a straw burning boiler furnace having my improved fire-back in position therein.V Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view on the line x-x of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the waterback. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional viewthrough a pair of the clamping plates thereof.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents a vertical tube or flue boiler, of the type usually employed in traction engines, and the lower open ends of the fire flues thereof, open into the rear end ofthe ordinary extended re-box B, having the usual water jacket. The tire-box B, is inclosed at one end by the usual doors C, and carries the grate D, upon which the' straw or other analogous light fuel is placed for burning, and at the inner end of said grate, at the rear end of the fire-box and in front of the lower open ends of the iire iiues of the boiler, is arranged the circulating water-back or bridge E. The water-back E, is placed vertically in the position noted and comprises a parallel series of horizontal water coils F, having the return bends G, at opposite ends thereof, and clamped in vertical alignment with each other by means of the opposite pairs of clamping plates H. The clamping plates H, are arranged in pairs at opposite side ends of the vertical series of coils, and are clamped in position on said coils and to each otherby means of the clamping bolts I. The'upper coil of the water back has the pipe J, thereof, connected to the crown sheet of the boiler in front of the iiues therein, by means of the double threaded connecting nipple K, While the lower coil of the back has the connecting pipe L, thereof, similarly connected to the water jacket of the tire box and at the bottom thereof, so that a continual circulation of water is maintained throughoutall the coils of the water back, to prevent the pipes thereof from burning out, While at the same time the parallel pipes of the connected water coils are arranged sufficiently close together so as to check any unconsumed straw carried thereagainst, and hold it until entirely consumed.
The Water coils comprising the water back just described are spaced at the center to form a widened cleaning opening N,'Awhich provides for access into the portion'of the `lire-box under the iiues so as to allow for the cleaning out of such space or portion of the fire boX. l
Fromthe foregoing it will be seen that the herein-described water-back is a separate attachment for the. boiler furnace, and may therefore be attached to any boiler of the type described, and I will have it understood that any changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction as embraced within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention. j
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a vertical flue ICO s t l 498,686
boiler having a water jacket fire boX; of a circulating Water back adapted to be arranged vertically within the fire box in front of the boiler flues, and having at a central point a widened cleaning opening for the space beloW the boiler lines, and connections between the Water back and the water jacket, sub stantially as set forth.
2. A Water back for vertical flue boilers, adapted to be placed in a Vertical position in front of the boiler fines, and comprising separate horizontal connected water coils arranged in a vertical series, and opposite pairs of clamping plates bolted to opposite side ends of the Vertical series of coils, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination with a straw burning boiler furnace and the vertical flue boiler; of
a circulating Water back adapted to be placed vertically in the fire-box in front of the lower ends of the flues, and comprising horizontal connected Water coils clamped in vertical series and spaced at an intermediate point to form a widened cleaning opening for the space below the boiler flues, and pipe connections from the upper and lower water coils
