SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,199, dated May 17, 1892. Application filed March 29, 1892. Serial No. 426,929. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ANNA CHAPMAN, of J ersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Oatamenial Bandage, of Which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to improvements in protective devices worn by women during monthly illness, and has for its object to provide an appliance of thetype indicated which will be adjustable in all its parts, comfortable in use, atford means for complete renovation and exchange of the absorbent pad, and adapt the latter to protect the person from chafing injury when the appliance is in service.

To these ends myinvention consists in the peculiar construction of parts and their combination, as is hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, and Fig. 2 is atransverse section on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1.

The improved appliance comprises a waistband A, in which elastic portions a are oppositely introduced, these latter connecting a front piece I) with a rear section c, the front piece having an extension I) at one side, which is adapted to have a buttoned connection with the side edge of the rear section, as indicated at d in Fig. 1. The portion 0 of the waistband A is vertically broadened to pro- Vide a depending flap c, Whereon one end portion of the bandage B is secured, removably, with the buttons d, or by equivalent means. Forwardly the bandage B is adjustably secured at its end to the front piece I) of the waistband with two elastic straps e, that are atfixed by one end of each to said piece and depend therefrom properly separated, so as to engage their other end portions with the detachable keeper-pins g, as shown in F g. 1. The removable bandage Bis preferably made of washable fabric containing sufficient vulcanized rubber to render it impervious to moisture, and is of such proportionate width and length as will best adapt it for service.

To render the pad 0 convenient for use and renovation, it is made rectangular and providedwith tabs h at two opposite edges, saidtabs being serviceable as means for a ready and neat connection of the pad to the tabs h, as before indicated. A sufficient length and width is given to the pad 0 to allow it to smoothly engage the bandage B on its inner surface, and when so applied it is folded together, as represented in Fig.2,thus affording a sufficient thickness. It is essential that the doubled pad 0 should overlap the side edges of the bandage B, as represented in the drawings.

From the peculiar construction of the device shown and described this improved appliance is adapted for quick adjustment and removal of parts, affords comfort in use, and

facilitates the renovation of portions requiring it. I

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a two part waistband, elastic pieces connecting said parts, and a pendent flap on the rear part thereof, of two elastic straps pendent from the front of the waistband, an elongated bandage detachably secured to the flap and elastic straps, tabs on the bandage near its ends, and a pad detachably secured to the flaps of the bandage, substantially as described.

The combination, with a two-part waistband, elastic pieces between said parts oppositely secured, and a pendent flap on the rear part thereof, of two elastic straps on the front of the waistband, an elongated bandage buttoned to the tab and attached by removable keeper-pins to the elastic straps, two pendent tabs on the inner surface ofthe bandage near its ends, a lap-folded absorbent pad, tabs oppositely secured on the edges of the pad,and

safety-pins which secure the tabs of the pad and bandage together, substantially as described.
