PUNCH FOR BANK-CHECKS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 474,932, dated May 17 1892.

Application filed June 24, 1891. Serial No. 397,375. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, SAMUEL S; WILLIAM- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield-and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punches for Bank-Checks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to bank-check punches, but has especial reference to that class of such devices in which the punches and dies have a unitary sliding movement, while the check and the devices for holding the same are stationary.

The object of my invention is to provide an exceedingly cheap and serviceable machine which will not be likely to get out of order.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is afront elevation of my improvement; Fig. 2, a section at line a: 00 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a detail perspective of the check-clamp; Fig. 4, a section at line y y of Fig. 2.

Similar numbers denote like parts in the several figures of the drawings.

1 is the head, secured to a bottom plate 2 by screws 3.

4 is the base, having ways 5, Within which the plate 2, and consequently the head 1, is adapted to slide freely.

(3 are the dies, secured by screws 7 upon the plate 2.

The check-clamp is composed of two members 8 9, secured together at their rear ends by ordinary rivets 10. The lower member 9 is secured at its front edge to a keeper 11 by screws 12, and the keeper is secured to the base 4 by screws 13 in such manner as to overhang the plate 2 and confine the latter in its ways. The upper member 8 of the clamp is of a spring nature and has a finger-lift 14, whereby it may be readily raised to admit a check. 15 is an opening in this upper member 8, scalloped to form consecutive divisions, within and through which the punches are operated, whereby the figures or characters cut in the check appear and are located consecutively within said divisions.

16 are the punches, mounted in any suitable manner within the head 1.

17 are finger-levers pivoted to the upper ends of the punches and having rearward extensions 18, which project within suitablyshaped openings 19 (only one being shown) in an angle-plate 20, secured on the head. 21 are guide-fingers secured on the upper member 8 of the check-clamp, and 22 are pins extending rigidly from the punches and overhanging said fingers. When the punches are depressed, the pins 22 enter between the fingers 21, and thereby accurately center the punch selected for operation with respect to the scalloped divisions of the opening 15.

I desire to say, however, that I make no claim herein to this scalloped opening, since the same is fully shown, described, and claimed in my pending application, Serial No. 383,227; also, I make no claim, broadly, to the combination of the guide-fingers and punch-extensions, since the same is fully shown, described, and claimed in my pending application, Serial No. 386,625, the co-operation of the punches and fingers being the same, whether to effect the centering of the check-clamp or the punches themselves. The upper plane of the base 4 is at an incline to a horizontal in order that the friction of the plate 2 on the front ways 5 may be lessened, whereby said plate will slide more freely than if said ways were in a horizontal plane.

I claim In a check-punch, the combination, with a sliding series of punches and their dies, of a stationary check-clamp between said punches and dies, vertical guide-fingers extending from said clamp, and rigid extensions from said punches, adapted to co-operate with said fingers to center the punches, substantially as set forth.
