ORNAMENTAL 'CHAIN LINK OR TIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 474,792, dated May 10, 1892. Application filed December 26, 1891. Serial No. 416,227- (No model.)
To all z'uhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN B. BULLOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleborough, in the county of Bristol, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ornamental Chain Links or Tips, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the improved chain link or tip formed in two opposite parts of sheet metal, as hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents afront view of the sheetmetal blank from which the sides of my improved link are to be formed. Fig. 2 represents an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a front view of the blank shown in Fig. 1 when struck up to form one side of the link. Fig. 4 represents a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 5 represents a front view of the same with the surplus stock cut away. Fig. 6 represents a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 7 represents a front view of the opposite side piece of the link. Fig. 8 represents a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 9 represents a front view showing the two parts placed together preparatory to attach ment. Fig. 10 represents a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 11 represents a front View of the finished link. Fig. 12 represents alongitudinal section of the same. Fig. 13 represents a front view of the chain-tip embodying my improvement.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the sheet-metal blank from which the opposite sides of my improved chain-link are to be formed, the said blank being placed between suitable dies and struck up, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, with a raised ornamental central portion a, and the raised rim b at the outer edge of the circular recesses c c, and in order to form the completed chain-link B, Figs. 11 and 12, I cut off the waste portion cl of the plate A from the corner 6, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, thus leaving the part g, and also cut off the said waste portion from a similar plate at the corner e, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, thus leaving the part 9, the edge f of the part g being then inserted into the space within the rim h of the part g, as shown in Figs. 9 and 10, and the edge '6 of the rim It turned inward over the edge fof the part g by means of suitable dies, as shown in Figs. 11 and 12. The bottom of the recesses c c are then cutout to form an opening or eye j, adapted to re ceive'the connecting wire link of the chain. The ornamental link B will thus be formed without the employment of solder, and the chain-tip 13' (shown in Fig. 13) is formed in the same manner as the link B,being simply one transversely-divided half of the link E. The raised rim 11 serves to form a suitable edge for the eye j, which receives the connecting wire link, the edges 7t 70' of the opposite parts g and g at the opening j being thus made to abut each other to form a properly-rounded edge for the said opening.
I claim as my invention- The improved chain link or tip formed of the two parts 9 and g ,provided with the eyeopening 7', having the raised rim 1), the part 9 being formed similar to the part g and secured to the said part g, substantially as described.
EDWIN B. BULLOCK. Witnesses:
